The Chicago Tribune just announced that This is Our Youth by Kenneth Lonergan is headed to Chicago, then Broadway this summer, guided by producer Scott Rudin and directed by Anna D. Shapiro. It will star Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin and Tavi Gevinson.

THIS IS OUR YOUTH will be staged in the round with Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in June and re-worked for the Cort Theatre on Broadway in August.

"Working in the round in an intimate setting does a lot for the forming of an ensemble," Shapiro told the Tribune. "You have to be pretty tight as a company. Then we can take another look at it before confronting that great rush of energy you get from a Broadway Theater."

Director Shapiro, who is helming Broadway's current OF MICE AND MEN revival starring James Franco and Chris O'Dowd, is also a Steppenwolf ensemble member.

THIS IS OUR YOUTH was originally produced by The New Group at the Intar Theatre in 1996, featuring Josh Hamilton, Mark Ruffalo and Missy Yager. It went on to play the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre in 1998, followed by a popular run in the West End and its Australian Premiere in 2002. The plot follows a group of privileged and foolish young adults in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in 1982.

Playwright Lonergan has no plans to change the play beyond "maybe one line I want to take out and one line I want to put back in," he said.

Cera and Culkin appeared together in a 2012 Australian production of This is Our Youth. Cera is well known for his role on the TV-to-Netflix comedy series Arrested Development. Among his film credits are This Is the End, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Juno, Superbad and more. Culkin also appeared in Scott Pilgrim with Cera; his other film credits include Movie 43, Paper Man, Igby Goes Down, The Cider House Rules, She's All That and more. This will be Gevinson's stage debut; she is a 17-year-old high school student from Oak Park who runs a super-popular online fashion magazine called Rookie.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company will welcome the play from June 10 to July 27. This is Our Youth will then begin at the Cort Theatre on Broadway on August 18, with the opening set for September 11, 2014.
