Reading of Obama-inspired BLACK PROPHET DOWN to Take Place at Alexander Bar Upstairs Theatre

A staged reading of BLACK PROPHET DOWN, a new political text-in-development by Ian Tucker (A FUNNY THING HAPPENED (ON THE WAY TO THE TALENT SHOW)), will take place at the Alexander Bar and Café's Upstairs Theatre this Saturday afternoon. A fast thinking, fast talking political drama, this new South African play is inspired by Barack Obama's 2013 visit to South Africa. Set in the United States of America, BLACK PROPHET DOWN aims to tell a story of global significance.

BLACK PROPHET DOWN takes place in a climate of leaks and scandal. A once popular American President prepares for an historic visit to Africa. He is desperate for an audience with an iconic and revered African leader, hoping it will help revive his flagging fortunes. The urgency of his quest is compounded by rumours that the African leader is on his deathbed. When a journalist threatens to break a story implicating the President in illegally hacking the ailing leader's family, a young and ambitious Aide on her first assignment has to step up to confront the scandal. Using her wits, smarts and poker skills she must kill the story, salvage valued relationships and hopefully inspire the President to regain his legendary mojo.

Directed by Kim Kerfoot ("MASTER HAROLD..." AND THE BOYS, THE THINGS YOU LEFT BEHIND), the reading will be performed by Brendon Daniels (THE KINGMAKERS, ANTHOLOGY: A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER) and Rebecca Makin-Taylor (THE KINGMAKERS, LAST ROUNDS).

BLACK PROPHET DOWN will be read on 6 June at 15:00. Tickets cost R60 (R50 if paid in advance) and can be booked online at the Alexander Bar website or purchased in person at the bar at any time during its regular opening hours.
