Project1VOICE One Play One Day 2017 is set, with over 40 theater companies and organizations participating in celebrating the American theater with staged readings of Yellowman--the 2002 Pulitzer-Prize finalist for Drama--by Dael Orlandersmith on Monday, June 19, 2017.

The New York flagship staged reading will be presented by Project1VOICE in association with Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts on Monday June 19th at Kumble Theater, on the campus of Long Island University Brooklyn at 7PM. Niegel Smith (artistic director of The Flea) directs. Howard Overshown (Cost of Living, Free Man of Color) will play Eugene, the role he originated opposite Yellowman playwright, Dael Orlandersmith. Stacey Sargeant (Eclipsed, Our Lady of Kibeho) will play Alma. Lighting by Eric Norbury. Bernita Robinson is Production Stage Manager. All proceeds from this benefit staged reading will support Project1VOICE, Inc (www.project1voice.org).

On the same evening, Project1VOICE will recognize outstanding achievements in the American theatre with the 3rd annual Project1VOICE HONORS. This year's honorees include award-winning lighting designer Allen Lee Hughes (Clybourne Park, Once On This Island), Broadway publicist and Tony Award winning producer Irene Gandy (The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess), and award-winning production designer Wynn Thomas (Hidden Figures, A Beautiful Mind). Each will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. All three are alums of the famed Negro Ensemble Company (NEC). Past Project1VOICE HONORS recipients include Wilhelmina "Billie" Allen, Douglas Turner Ward, Linda Twine and Danny Holgate.

Additionally, a special tribute will honor the 50th anniversary of the NEC and its visionary co-founders-Robert Hooks, Gerald Krone and Douglas Turner Ward.

Project1VOICE is an internationally recognized 501(c)(3) performing arts service organization committed to presenting programs and initiatives that promote and support the American theater, specifically black playwrights. One Play One Day is Project1VOICE's signature event. The event revives and reintroduces classic plays from the American theater canon that have been forgotten. Each year on the third Monday in June, same day staged readings of the same play are presented, hence the name, One Play One Day. One Play One Day is now in its seventh consecutive year. Project1VOICE was the executive producer of the recent 35th anniversary reunion/photo of the Michael Bennett directed/produced Dreamgirls companies at 890 Broadway.

For tickets and info: www.kumbletheater.org or the Kumble Theater Box Office (718) 488-1624. Tickets are $30. For an evolving list of participating theaters and organizations, visit www.project1voice.org.
