"Philippine piña and other indigenous textiles can compete in the world of high fashion." - Anthony Cruz Legarda

New York, September 26, 2012 - Fashion Institute of Technology alumnus Anthony Cruz Legarda, who is also a renowned Filpino-American fashion designer and textile technologist based in San Francisco, presents "Piña Couture New York," a fashion show that highlights the signature textile piña, a high-quality cloth handwoven from natural pineapple fibers made only in the Philippines, at the Philippine Consulate's Kalayaan Hall tonight, September 28 at 6:30 p.m.

"We should strive to create a branding for the Philippine piña to be a world-renowned fabric like the Thai silk, Indian cotton, and the Irish linen, as we produce the finest natural and organic fabrics made by master artisans of the Philippines, and tailor them into museum and heirloom quality clothing," says Legarda in a press statement.

Legarda frequently travels to the Philippines to source native fabrics for his eco-friendly, luxury creations; he also personally trains and supervises a select group of custom fabric weavers in Visayas and Mindanao.
