Teatro101, responsible for last summer's successful production of The Little Dog Laughed, presents its first musical VIOLET, opening January 7, 2010 in Baltimore, MD.

Set in the Deep South during the early days of the Civil Rights Movement, VIOLET follows the growth and enlightenment of a bitter young woman accidentally scarred by her father as she learns about beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider. One of the most acclaimed off-Broadway musicals of the '90s, VIOLET astounded critics and audiences with its powerful story, its energetic, toe-tapping Gospel, Rock, Country, and Rhythm and Blues score by Jeanine Tesori - composer of Caroline or Change, Shrek. VIOLET won an Obie Award for Jeanine Tesori, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical.

Based on 'The Ugliest Pilgrim' by Doris Betts, VIOLET has music by Jeanine Tesori and book & lyrics by Brian Crawley. The New York Times noted a style that is "Steeped in the exotic back-country blend of freakishness and religious fever."

VIOLET is directed by Ryan Michael Haase and musically directed by Cedric D. Lyles. It's cast features Katie Solomon as Violet and Jayne Harris, Troy Hopper, Steve Bainbridge, John Hurley, Angelo Arrington, Vanessa Buenger, Morgan Fannon, CrystAl Freeman, Rebecca Garrahy, David Gregory, Kim Kernan, Amanda Rife, Paul Wissman, Todd Zachwieja, and Kristen Zwobot.
The show runs January 7 (Thursday) through January 24, 2010 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets are $20 general. Performances are held at The Mobtown Theatre in Hampden. For tickets, directions, more information, visit teatro101.com.
