Balagan Theatre continues their effort to get new musicals a place to be heard with their New Works Summer Series and their offering of the new musical "Island Song", a show exploring the lives of the young and ambitious in a city that can at the same time foster and crush such ambition.

Written by Sam Carner and Derek Gregor, "Island Song" follows five young New Yorkers as they strive towards their dreams. Taryn wants to further her career and have fun. Ted wants to settle down. Cooper wants to be an actor and make his Dad proud. Caroline wants to be a writer. And Antonia is looking for love. And even with all their disparate goals they all still retain a common love affair with the city itself.

Director Marlo Hunter introduced the show and said that it's in that weird place between being a song cycle (which it originally was) and a full-blown musical. As it's a new work it's a little soon to report on any drawbacks it may have. But I can say that the five members of the cast, Eric Hagreen, Kirsten deLohr Helland, Emily Rogers, Heath Saunders, and Chauncey Trask pull off some vocal wonders throughout. And our cameras were allowed an inside look at this new work. Check out the pictures below.
