Pheeroan akLaff, a leading and much admired percussionist in jazz and contemporary music, brings his new project, Brooklyn Mime Troope, to Jalopy Theater. The show of "Message Music" includes the repertoire that he co-wrote with his long time cohort Jerome Harris.

Their work together includes the Jump Up band, a reggae /funk / jazz group that Oliver Lake recorded with Gramavision records in 1981. This evening features the electric sound and activist ethos that electrified the 1980's.

Originally from Detroit, akLaff has spent most of his life in Brooklyn and making remarkable advances with the American Drum-set. In a career of over thirty years he has performed and recorded with many of the modern era's leading figures, including Cecil Taylor, Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake, Anthony Davis, Sonny Sharrock and Leo Smith and Rashied Ali. He has been involved with hundreds of recordings and even more performances in the U.S.A., South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. In addition to composing music and leading bands, he teaches at Wesleyan University.

Brooklyn Mime Troope features:

Jerome Harris - bass
Shu Nakamura - guitar
