Peters, Alexander, Allen and More Appear in Mississippi Rising Concert, Oct. 1

Theatre stars such as Bernadette Peters, Debbie Allen, Jason Alexander will join celebrities from the worlds of film, TV and music in Mississippi Rising, a concert that will benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.  The three-hour event will take place on October 1st at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

Peters, Morgan Freeman, Ray Romano, Whoopi Goldberg, Alexander, Sela Ward, Marilu Henner, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kathy Ireland, Lance Bass, Delta Burke, Gerald McRaney, Jean Smart, Debbie Allen, Doris Roberts, Mary Haskell, Gary Morris, Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr. and Steve Azar are the talents (as of now) who have been assembled for the concert, which was put together by Mississippians Sam Haskell III and Lanny Griffith.  Proceeds from Mississippi Rising will go to the Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund.

Broadway legend Peters has received two Tonys--for Song and Dance and Annie Get Your Gun--while "Seinfeld" star Alexander is also a winner for Jerome Robbins' Broadway.  Allen is a two-time Tony nominee for Sweet Charity and West Side Story.  Movie star Freeman also has extensive experience in New York theatre, while Burke, Smart, Henner, Roberts and Gifford are also known for their theatre work, as well as for their television careers.

"Mississippi Rising is going to be a tremendous boost not just in providing desperately needed funds for our recovery effort, but also in bringing national attention to our efforts as we transition from emergency relief to rebuilding Mississippi stronger, bigger and better," stated Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.
