Peace Center Announces 2017-18 Peace Chamber Program

The 2017-2018 Peace Chamber program offers a chamber music concert series, informative lectures, a summer workshop and master classes with visiting artists.

From the curious music-lover to the chamber music enthusiast to musicians of all levels hungry to learn more, the Peace Chamber program provides music and music education to the upstate community. Artists from around the country come to the Peace Center to perform, teach, inspire, celebrate and ensure that chamber music is accessible to all.

In addition to the programs open to the public, Artist-in-Residence Miles Hoffman will work with student music groups and visit schools to engage students in music appreciation activities.

Peace Chamber Concert Series

The 2017-2018 Peace Chamber concert series welcomes chamber musicians from around the world for unforgettable, intimate chamber performances in the Gunter Theatre.

Sweet Plantain

Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, at 7 p.m.

Artfully fusing the western classical traditions in which they were trained with the hip-hop, jazz improv, and Latin rhythms on which they were raised, Sweet Plantain is a refreshingly new string quartet. With members hailing from the Bronx, New Jersey, Argentina and Venezuela, these musicians create a contemporary, urban Latino sound.

The American Chamber Players

Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at 7 p.m.

Among today's most exciting and innovative chamber music ensembles, The American Chamber Players "[offer] a warm, seductively luxurious sound and an impressive precision" (The New York Times). Formed by Peace Chamber Artist-in-Residence Miles Hoffman, they return to the stage with a program featuring the "Piano Quartet in G Minor" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and pieces by Frank Bridge, Pierre Sancan and Carl Maria von Weber.

Tara Erraught, mezzo-soprano

Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at 7 p.m.

Acclaimed for her rich voice, expansive range and dynamic stage presence, Irish-born mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught enjoys an ever-growing international career and a wide operatic repertoire. In the coming season, she makes a double Metropolitan Opera debut, first in September as Nicklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann and then as Hansel in Hansel und Gretel in January 2018.

New York Polyphony

Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at 8 p.m.

Praised for a "rich, natural sound that's larger and more complex than the sum of its parts" (NPR), two-time Grammy-nominated New York Polyphony is one of the foremost vocal chamber ensembles active today. "Singers of superb musicianship and vocal allure" (The New Yorker), the four men give vibrant, modern voice to repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to cutting-edge compositions.

Brooklyn Rider

Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, at 7 p.m.

Hailed as "the future of chamber music" (Strings), string quartet Brooklyn Rider attracts fans by playing an eclectic mix, including music by Phillip Glass, John Adams, Björk, Sting, Elvis Costello and more. With a performance style that draws rave reviews from classical, world and rock critics alike, they close the 2017-2018 Peace Chamber concert series with a gripping performance.

Classical Insights: Chamber Music Lectures

Led by Hoffman, these FREE talks held in the Huguenot Mill focus on themes of musical interest and offer a deeper exploration of the chamber music world.

Magical Mozart

Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, 6:30 p.m.

Miles Hoffman will unravel the magic behind Mozart's life and works in order to better understand why the composer has been beloved by audiences for more than 200 years. The American Chamber Players will tackle his work on Oct. 26.

Celebrating Chamber Music: Five Centuries of Music for Friends

Tuesday, May 1, 2018, 6:30 p.m.

For more than 500 years, composers have been writing chamber music for the sheer pleasure of playing the work with their friends. This lecture celebrates the history and fun behind the creation of this often misunderstood art form.

Peace Chamber Summer Workshop

July 20-23, 2017

July 26-29, 2018

Open to talented amateurs, accomplished musicians, and everyone in between, participants will gain invaluable experience from professional visiting artists in an authentic chamber setting. The workshop will conclude with a chamber music showcase performance for friends and family.

Season tickets for the five concerts in the Peace Chamber concert series are $180 and are on sale now. Single tickets are $45 each and will go on sale this summer.
