The Club Harlem Revue takes place in a time, before the Casinostook over Atlantic City, when nightdubbing was in vogue with leggy showgirls, hysterical comedians, and great singers & dancers.

The most famous of the clubs on the musical street known as Kentucky Avenue was the Club Harlem. It was thought of as a "black Copacabana" and starred the major black talent of the era in fantastic stage shows that had flair and fashion from Memorial Day to labor Day.

ON KENTUCKY AVENUE is set during the Club Harlem dress rehearsal for opening night of the 1969 season. Within our fictional show, there is a love triangle between the MC, the lead showgirl, and the featured female singer. The show features an original score that is true to the era, interspersed with classic songsfrom the 60's.

ON KENTUCKY AVENUE captures the feel and aura of the club, based on the personal experiences of Adam and Jeree Wade who performed there during different eras - 30 years apart -- and were witnesses to much of the backstage intrigues that took place nightly.

The Creators:

The Original Songbirds Unlimited Productions (Branice McKenzie, Frank Owens, Ty Stephens, Adam Wade and Jeree Wade) blossomed from a thesis at Brown University (Rhode I s I and) into a multi-faceted Production Company! Their original production - SHADES OF THE COTTON CLUB, as it was originally titled -- was the brainchild of Mrs. Jeree Wade who subsequently enlisted the help of Frank Owens (musical director/arranger) along with several of her student/colleagues to mount this revue about the Harlem Renaissance. Lega lIy unable to use "Cotton Club" in the title, the revue was subsequently re-titled SHADES OF HARLEM. Along the way, different performers were recruited, namely Ty Stephens and Branice McKenzie, Juanita Boisseau (one of the original Cotton Club Chorines), as well as Ludie Jones (Lew Leslie's "Blackbirds"). SHADES OF HARLEM has sin c e been performed at many

venues all over the world from 1985 to last year. Included on this list are New York, Florida, Texas, Atlanta and Arkansas, Lithuania, Osaka, Japan, St. Croix and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy. Other productions that have sprung forth under the aegis of "Songbirds Unlimited Productions" are Jukebox Jubilee, Savoy Suite, Jazz Alley and Basically Blake, a revue of the music of Eubie Blake.
