On Friday, April 13 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, The New York Pops under the direction of Steven Reinekepays tribute to iconic Academy Award-winning music scores and songs that have been the soundtrack of the American film experience over the past forty years.

Joined by Essential Voices USA and its director Judith Clurman, The New York Pops winds down its 2011–2012 season at Carnegie Hall by taking audiences through music from films including Doctor Zhivago, Out of Africa, Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings. In addition, the orchestra will celebrate the 80th birthday of New York-born composer, conductor, and legendary film score writer John Williams by performing the composer’s Oscar-winning music from films including Jaws, Star Wars, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler’s List.

Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Best Original Score are given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The awards are presented to the songwriters who have composed the best original song written specifically for a film and to the best substantial body of music in the form of dramatic underscoring written specifically for a film by the submitting composer. Both award categories were introduced at the 7th Academy Awards in 1934, the ceremony honoring the best in film.

The New York Pops’ Hollywood Award Winners performance marks the penultimate concert of the orchestra’s 2011—2012 concert season at Carnegie Hall. The orchestra’s final performances—two Carnegie Hall Family Concerts entitled Jim Henson’s Musical World—take place on April 14 at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and pay tribute to Jim Henson's great legacy through song and puppetry.
