New York Live Arts to Present Luciana Achugar's OTRO TEATRO, 4/2-5
New York Live Arts presents the New York City premiere of New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Award winning luciana achugar's OTRO TEATRO, April 2 - 5 at 7:30pm in the New York Live Arts Theater. Described by The New York Times as ".sensual, raw and intensely physical," achugar will perform her latest evening-length solo work exploring the concept of ritual.
Called "...exhilarating...inspiring...[and] graceful" by the Star Tribune after the work's world premiere at the Walker Art Center, OTRO TEATRO is achugar's current search for another kind of theater; a ritual of becoming; an occasion for communion. Placed metaphorically in the ruins of a collapsed theater, this solo work is a dark rite of passage from destruction to rebuilding. It is a dance that is meant to be felt as it is seen, giving voice to the arcane spirit and desire of our uncivilized bodies. Working with her once again is New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Award recipient and long time collaborator Michael Mahalchick.
OTRO TEATRO is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by New York Live Arts in partnership with the Walker Art Center and NPN. At New York Live Arts, OTRO TEATRO is made possible, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts, and by contributors to the Dance Theater Workshop Commissioning Fund. It was developed, in part, through the New York Live Arts' Studio Series. OTRO TEATRO is also supported, in part, by the Jerome Foundation; The Field's 2013 Field Dance Fund; the Mertz Gilmore Foundation; MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital; and the New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and additional funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. OTRO TEATRO was developed, in part, through an LMCC commission and an artist residency in 2013 and 2014 as part of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Extended Life Dance Development program; and the Hatchery Project, a collaborative residency initiative between The Chocolate Factory, Live Arts Brewery/Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography at Florida State University, and Vermont Performance Lab, and is made possible with major funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and additional support by the National Endowment for the Arts.
