Although the 2007 festival seems like it only finished yesterday, the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) is already gearing up for its fifth year, to run from September 15 through October 5, 2008.

From January 1 through March 1, NYMF will be accepting open submissions for The Next Link Project, through which 18 subsidized production slots in our 2008 Festival are awarded.

Over 300 submissions were received in 2007, and NYMF expects to receive even more for the 2008 Festival.  Shows selected for The Next Link Project receive a utomatic acceptance in NYMF '08, extensive access to and professional guidance from the Next Link dramaturg team and other writer support resources, including industry networking and producer "matchmaking" events, and financial assistance through discounted technical support and waiving of production deposits.Previous Next Link selections have included audience favorites, such as the Verizon Best of Fest Award Winners The Boy in the Bathroom ('07) and Smoking Bloomberg ('06), and shows that have commercially transferred, such as Altar Boyz, [title of show] and The Great American Trailer Park Musical.

NYMF maintains an open submissions policy and a blind evaluation process for its Next link Project to ensure that writers from every level of the theatre community, from working professionals to those whose work has not yet been produced, are given the opportunity to participate.  Finalists will also be evaluated by a jury of industry professionals, who in 2008 will include noted talents such as Tony Award-winning lyricist and bookwriter Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Once on this Island , The Glorious Ones), Tony Award-nominated lyricist and bookwriter Michael Korie (Grey Gardens, The Grapes of Wrath) and Tony Award-winning producer Elizabeth Williams (The Wild Party, Bombay Dreams, The Secret Garden, Crazy For You ).

Previous jury members have included such Tony-winning talents as Victoria Clark, Raul Esparza, Robyn Goodman, Margo Lion, Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx, Kathleen Marshall, Kevin McCollum, Tom Meehan, Anthony Rapp, Phylicia Rashad and BD Wong.

Authors submitting to The Next Link Project will need to provide a demo recording of their songs, a detailed synopsis of their show, a 15-page script sample (consecutive pages representing the heart of the show and including lyrics for at least one of the songs), a complete script, and, if applicable, proof of rights to adapt underlying material.

All applications take place online.   To begin the process or to learn more about The Next Link Project, please visit www.nymf.org.
