The musical college romp Good News will be the latest overlooked gem to be presented in a minimalist concert production by Musicals Tonight!  The 1927 show, which introduced "The Varsity Drag" to the nation, will run from November 1st through 12th at the 45th Street Theatre (between Eighth and Ninth Avenues).

Good News features music by Ray Henderson, lyrics by B.G. DeSylva and Lew Brown and a book by Brown and Laurence Schwab.  The show "takes us back to the ingenuousness of the 1920s on college campuses (and on Broadway). Football-mad Tait College's star is flunking astronomy until he falls for his tutor. A two-year run was followed by a hit movie. Songs include: 'The Best Things in Life are Free,' 'Good News,' 'Lucky in Love,' 'The Varsity Drag,' and 'Just Imagine,'" state press notes.

Performed with singers and a piano, the show will feature
Selby Brown (Sylvester), Ryan Dunkin (Beef), Adam MacDonald (Tom), Miss Matherne (Babe u/s), Noel Molinelli (Connie), Jonathan Osborne (Professor), Annie Ramsey (Babe), Roger Rifkin (Coach), Sandie Rosa (Flo), Adam Shonkwiler (Bobby), Tad Wilson (Pooch), Dana Zihlman (Connie), as well as Leo Ash Evens, Katy Frame, Ben Franklin, Adam MacDonald, Patrick Maubert, Erik McEwen, Emily Mixon and Matherne in the ensemble.

Good News will be helmed and choreographed by Thomas Mills, while Rick Hip-Flores will serve as musical director and vocal arranger.  Shih-hui Wu will provide the lighting design.

Mel Miller is the artistic director of Musicals Tonight!, which will be presenting its 33rd concert production with Good News.  Mlle. Modiste (March 21st through April 2nd, 2006), Oh, Lady! Lady!! (April 25th through May 7th) and Let's Face It (May 9th to the 21st) are also slated for this season.

The show's performance schedule is Tuesday at 7:30 PM, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 PM.  Tickets, which are $19, can be ordered at Smarttix at (212) 868-4444 or www.smarttix.com.  Visit www.musicalstonight.com for more information.
