Molly Ringwald and Michael York to Star as Charity and King Arthur in CA

The American Musical Theatre of San Jose will play host to two stars in its 2006 season: Molly Ringwald will play the title role in Sweet Charity while Michael York will star as Camelot's King Arthur.

The theatre's production of Sweet Charity will boast direction by Walter Bobbie and choreography by Wayne Cilento, both of whom worked on the recently-shuttered Broadway revival starring Christina Applegate.  Sweet Charity, with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and a book by Neil Simon, will be presented in fall of 2006.  Ringwald will play Charity Hope Valentine, the vulnerable taxi dancer whose heart is perpetually on the mend.

The theatre's staging of Camelot will feature a revised book by Michael Lerner, who adapted it from the libretto of his father Alan Jay Lerner, who also wrote lyrics to Frederick Loewe's music.  It will be presented in winter of 2007.

Ringwald first became famous for starring in a string of John Hughes-directed 80s teen movies such as The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles.  She has also appeared on Broadway in Enchanted April and Cabaret, and off-Broadway in tick, tick...BOOM!, Modern Orthodox, How I Learned to Drive and Lily Dale.  Other film credits include Pretty in Pink, King Lear, Face the Music and Not Another Teen Movie.

York has appeared in dozens of films, including the Austin Powers films, Logan's Run, The Three Musketeers, Murder on the Orient Express, Cabaret and Romeo and Juliet.  He has appeard on Broadway in Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, The Crucible, Bent, and Out Cry, as well as the musical The Little Prince and The Aviator, which never opened.

The American Musical Theatre of San Jose's 2006-2007 season will also include The King and I (fall 2006), Dolores Duran Cefalu, Tim Bair and Troy Rintala's Christmas Dreamland (December 1st-31st, 2006), Harry Warren, Al Dubin and Michael Stewart's 42nd Street (spring 2007), and another spring 2007 show to be announced.
