Christopher Durang's madcap metaphysical comedy Miss Witherspoon will play two extra weeks at Playwrights Horizons. Originally scheduled to end its run on December 18th, it will now play through January 1st, 2006.

Written by
Tony Award-nominee and two-time Obie Award winner Christopher Durang, Miss Witherspoon is a co-production with The McCarter Theatre, where it was presented prior to its New York run; the show began previews on November 11th.

Miss Witherspoon, which is directed by T
ony Award-nominee and Obie Award-winner Emily Mann (Anna in the Tropics, Having Our Say, Artistic Director of The McCarter Theatre), features 2-time Obie Award winner Kristine Nielsen (Durang's Betty's Summer Vacation at Playwrights Horizons and Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge, A Streetcar Named Desire) in the title role, along with Lynda Gravátt, Mahira Kakkar, Jeremy Shamos and Colleen Werthmann in its cast.

"In life, Veronica (Nielsen) turned her back on religion – so why is she spending eternity in the netherworld with a Hindu spirit guide (Kakkar) who calls her Miss Witherspoon? And why is she continually being sent back to earth to live lives she adamantly refuses to lead? Will she open herself up to enlightenment and learn her place in the world?," query production notes. The production features sets by David Korins, costumes by Jess Goldstein, lighting by Jeff Croiter and sound design by Darron L. West.

Durang, who is a playwright of both popular and critical acclaim, is known for works that blend wacky and surreal comedy with pathos. Betty's Summer Vacation, Baby with the Bathwater, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, The Actor's Nightmare and Laughing Wild were all presented at Playwrights Horizon, while other credits include The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Beyond Therapy and his latest, Adrift in Macao, a musical with music by Peter Melnick that recently ran at the Philadelphia Theatre Company. A New York production is in the works, as well.
