Tony Award winner Idina Menzel will open the National Symphony Orchestra Pops season from October 28 to October 30, the Kennedy Center has announced.  Marvin Hamlisch, the main Pops conductor, will conduct the concerts, entitled 'A Date with Idina Menzel,' and will perform himself following the opening concert.  Menzel will sing classic pop songs, musical theatre numbers (including songs from WICKED and RENT), and some of her own compositions.

Patti LuPone, who was originally scheduled to open the season, has withdrawn in order to appear in Broadway's WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN.

The concerts will take place at the Kennedy Center's concert hall.  Tickets range from $20 to $45 and will go on sale on August 2 to Kennedy Center members and on August 11 to the general public.

Idina Menzel won a Tony Award for her performance as Elphaba in WICKED; she reprised the role in the West End.   She was also nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in RENT.  Her other stage credits include Broadway's AIDA, off-Broadway's THE WILD PARTY, THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, and SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE, and concert productions of HAIR, FUNNY GIRL, and CHESS.  On screen, Menzel's credits include 'Rent,' 'Enchanted,' and the hit series GLEE.  Menzel has also released three albums, 'Still I Can't Be Still,' 'Here,' and 'I Stand.'
