Marcia Gay Harden Replaces Rosemarie DeWitt on THE NEWSROOM

As previously reported by BWW TV World, Rosemarie DeWitt has dropped out of the second season of Aaron Sorkin's HBO drama, THE NEWSROOM. According to EW, acclaimed actress Marcia Gay Harden is stepping up to replace her.

DeWitt had reportedly already filmed scenes for the show, but as the writers altered her storyline, reshoots were ordered - and DeWitt was unavailable. As a guest star, she was let out of her contract.

According to Deadline, Gay Harden will play Rebecca Halliday, "a litigator who's been hired to defend the fictional Atlantis Cable News channel, where the show is set, in a multimillion-dollar wrongful-termination suit."

In 1993, Harden debuted on Broadway in the role of Harper Pitt in Tony Kushner's ANGELS IN AMERICA. The role earned her critical acclaim and she received a Tony Award nomination (Best Featured Actress in a Play).

In 2009, Harden returned to Broadway in GOD OF CARNAGE and received a Tony Award for her work in the play. Harden's work in film includes MYSTIC RIVER, POLLOCK, and INTO THE WILD. She's also appeared on innumerous television shows, including LAW & ORDER: SVU, DAMAGES, and ROYAL PAINS.

Created by Aaron Sorkin (Oscar(R) winner for writing "The Social Network," executive producer and writer of the multiple Emmy(R) winner "The West Wing"), the newHBO drama series follows a news team on its quixotic mission to reclaim the legacy of Murrow and Cronkite in The Face of a fickle audience, corporate mandates and tangled personal relationships.

The series is executive produced by Sorkin, Scott Rudin (the Oscar(R) winner "No Country for Old Men") and Alan Poul (HBO's multiple Emmy(R) winner "Six Feet Under"). Jeff Daniels (Golden Globe nominee for "The Squid and the Whale," "Something Wild" and "The Purple Rose of Cairo") stars as Will McAvoy andEmily Mortimer ("Hugo," "Shutter Island") stars as MacKenzie McHale.
