Mamaí Theatre Company has released a statement on the planned protests of its production of THE TESTAMENT OF MARY.

"We are proud to bring this sensitive, powerful story of Mary's humanity to the stage. It is the work of a gifted, imaginative playwright. In response to the protests related to the assumption that this piece is the text of the novella, or a staging of the Broadway production, I invite protesters to stand corrected. This is an original staging conceived by the director. The playwright's script excludes much of the text from the novella. It is a reverent, beautiful production. A number of practicing Catholics, including nuns and theologians, have seen the show and been moved to a standing ovation. In addition, Catholics number among the production team. The playbill includes a note on how the director and actress approached Mr. Toibin 's text to provide this singular, stunning production of The Testament of Mary. Mamaí Theatre Company is thrilled that audiences have responded so positively to this production." - Bernadette Clemens, Executive Artistic Director

THE TESTAMENT OF MARY by Colm Tóibín, featuring Anne McEvoy, runs now through July 23, 2017 (Wednesdays-Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:30pm) in The Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre.

Directed by Bernadette Clemens, the show features scenic design by Don McBride, lighting design by Marcus Dana, costume design by Kristine Davies, sound design by Richard Ingraham, and properties design by Monica Plunkett.

Imagine the most iconic mother of all time telling her private version of a story we thought we knew. Colm Tóibín's retelling of the pivotal events in the life of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Mary the survivor challenges us to imagine the suffering, courage and strength of mothers on a colossal scale -- up close and personal. Prepare to join a gifted playwright and performer in a one-of-a-kind solo journey that will leave you with new insight and questions, along with a deeper appreciation for human endurance in the context of mystery.

Originally produced on Broadway by Scott Rudin Productions. Commissioned by Dublin Theatre Festival and Landmark Productions with the support of Irish Theatre Trust.

Mamaí Theatre Company was co-founded in 2010 and established as a 501(c)3 in 2012. Our mission is to create intelligent, relevant classical theatre that offers an artistic home for Cleveland theatre artists and equal opportunity for women in the professional theatre community.
