Made for Pearl Debuts Janis Joplin Inspired Line

Janis Joplin is best known for her soulful voice and volcanic performances, but the Texas-born legend's Bohemian-Goddess wardrobe left an equally indelible mark on the fashion world.

More than 40 years after her debut album, Joplin's instantly recognizable look remains iconic: silky blouses, flowing flares, an armful of bangles and oversized sunglasses. Or, as Greg Evans once wrote in The New York Times, "...Joplin looked like God's idea of a rock star."

"Janis once said, 'You feel all things at once, so why not wear all things at once,'" her younger brother Michael Joplin recalls. "Today, fashion magazines call her the mother of modern boho chic. I imagine she'd get a real kick out of that."

The fashion line - which bears Janis' nickname, "Pearl" - includes authentic contemporary interpretations of items she wore during the Sixties. "Her free-spirited attitude is the common thread that holds the collection together," explains her niece Malyn Joplin, who is developing the line with leading design maven Katie Kay Mead. She adds: "What's great about Made for Pearl is that wearing it makes it easy to unleash your inner-Janis."

Highlights from the current Made for Pearl collection include: ornate rope-length necklaces adorned with precious and semi-precious stones; stackable sterling silver bangles; multi-finger turquoise rings; silk-lined fringe leather bucket bags; and tie dye suede wristlets. Every item featured in the collection was made in the U.S.A. using the finest quality materials.

An assortment of additional garments are coming soon to the store, including hand-beaded pants; rompers in either white lace or purple paisley; sleeveless stretch silk dresses; and stretch velvet flare pants that look like they just walked off the stage at the Fillmore. New items will be added to the collection each spring and fall.

The collection arrives as Joplin's legacy enjoys a strong resurgence. Her life and music are the focus of A Night with Janis Joplin, the critically acclaimed musical that opens on Broadway at the Lyceum Theater on October 10. Also this fall, Janis will receive a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and next year, she will be the subject of a theatrical documentary that will also be featured on the PBS series American Masters.

Joplin recorded and performed as a solo artist and the lead singer of several groups - Big Brother and the Holding Company, Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. That work, combined with her landmark performances at Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and Woodstock in 1969, cemented her status as an icon and inspired countless imitators and musical devotees.

Joplin passed in October 1970 at the age of 27. Her final album, Pearl, was released posthumously the following year and has been certified Quadruple-Platinum, becoming the top-selling release of her career. In 2003, it was listed among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
