According to Deadline, the man behind MAMA, Andres Muschietti, has entered talks to helm the upcoming reboot of Universal's hit 1999 film THE MUMMY. Len Wiseman was originally set to direct, but departed the project earlier this summer.

In the original film, American adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) teams up with an archaeologist (Rachel Weisz) and her bumbling brother (John Hannah) to stop an evil mummy they accidentally brought back to life. Imhotep, once an Egyptian high priest, was buried alive after murdering Pharaoh Seti I and trying to run off with his wife. Now Imhotep is resurrected and determined to exact his revenge and reclaim his love - at any cost.

K/O Paper Products are producing the film, which features an updated script by Jon Spaihts.

Muschietti's MAMA wasproduced by Guillermo Del Toro, and starred Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
