Jeffrey Hatcher’s hilarious adaptation of The Government Inspector closed late last month, concluding the Guthrie’s official 2007-08 season. The 2008-09 season, kicked off by Little House on the Prairie, features an entire season of plays for the two main stages that are receiving their first-ever Guthrie productions.

Rehearsals begin September 18 for Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker, directed by Associate Director of Studio Theater Programming Benjamin McGovern. This provocative piece features Jeune Lune veterans Steven Epp (Davies) and Stephen Cartmell (Mick), who will join Guthrie favorite Kris L. Nelson (Aston).

Simon Jones (The Home Place, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) will play C.S. Lewis in William Nicholson’s Shadowlands, directed by Joe Dowling. The production will also feature ChariTy Jones (Jane Eyre, A Christmas Carol) as Lewis’ wife Joy Davidman Gresham. Additional casting for the production, which begins previews November 1 on the McGuire Proscenium Stage, will be announced later this month.

As the Coen Brothers begin shooting their next film in St. Louis Park this month, it’s perfect timing for “Fargo” alum John Carroll Lynch to also make his Twin Cities return for the Guthrie’s first-ever staging of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, directed by Ethan McSweeny (A Body of Water, Romeo & Juliet, Six Degrees of Separation). The cast also includes Amy Van Nostrand, who recently played Linda Loman in the Chautauqua Theater Company production of Miller’s Death of a Salesman, which McSweeny also directed.

Don’t miss baritone Bradley Greenwald (1776, She Loves Me, The Comedy of Errors) and pianist Sonja Thompson in recital with Schumann’s Dichterliebe (Sept. 21, 28 and October 5 in the Dowling Studio). The music of the song cycle echoes throughout Old Wicked Songs, the Theater Latte Da production directed by Peter Rothstein and featuring Guthrie favorites Raye Birk (The Government Inspector, Third, A Christmas Carol) and Jonas Goslow (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peer Gynt, The Real Thing).

Rush lines for Little House on the Prairie continue to remain strong following last month’s announcement that the Guthrie added 12 seats to the second balcony, only making them available to the rush line prior to each performance. Want to be the first in line for these remaining seats? The Box Office staff recommends arriving at least 90 minutes prior to the performance. Performances continue through October 19 on the McGuire Proscenium Stage.

Labor Day has passed, meaning single tickets for A Christmas Carol are now on sale. Gary Gisselman returns to direct the production, which will again feature Raye Birk in his fourth year as the miserly Scrooge. Performances begin November 18 on the Wurtele Thrust Stage.
