Before the advent of the written word, storytellers had to use creative methods to ensure that their stories were not forgotten. That is why they introduced alliteration, rhythm, hymns and repetition. The verses would be sung or repeated in the kind of droning voices that monks used to remember long texts. This is how the Edda, the Iliad, Beowulf and Ramayana survived until the stories could be written down. This is also the story of Finland's national epic, the Kalevala. These songs were sung in different situations to confront the mysteries of life.

Under the Sun and Over the Moon is an absorbing retelling of the once sung runos in the Kalevala, which means "land of the descendants of Kaleva." In a time as ancient as it seems, author Loretta Suliin Busch, interweaves these myths with imagination and attention to detail. Each myth, although unsettling, becomes vibrantly alive as the portrayed characters, in their surroundings, endure the unendurable.

Among these myths, readers will find tales that will arouse their emotions in the complex mixture of adventures. There are trees and birds which talk, a Sampo with godlike powers, bees that seek healing honey, a homeless, pregnant bird, a resurrected man, a double suicide, six gold eggs and one iron. There are heroes with supernatural powers and women who are isolated in their hopes, dreams, joy, and tragedies as they try to understand their own lives.

These mythical stories will make readers realized that there are also forces of right and wrong that must be addressed. Through myth, these stories cannot be considered to be true. However, it recognizes their truth because life is seldom what it seems. Under the Sun and Over the Moon presents stories that embraces the past and helps readers to cope with current issues.
