Loretta Creech Reveals Story of Father's Murder in NO TEARS FOR ERNEST CREECH

Author Loretta Creech's chance encounter with Robert Kennedy while attending Alice Lloyd College in 1968, the sincere, sympathetic look he had given her when she told him how her father had been gunned down during a picket strike only three years back, left a profound mark on her. The event and many others inspired her to write her father's story in her book, "No Tears for Ernest Creech: A Forgotten Man in 'The Great Society'"(published by AuthorHouse).

The title was taken from an article written by Ted Humes in the Human Events Magazine in March of 1965, an article well written and inspiring to Creech. It told the true plight of the coal miner in Appalachia and of her family.

This is the tragic story of the miner, Ernest, and his family. He went down in those dark holes every day to bring up the black coal until one day, March 3, 1965, he didn't come home. Just as real as the unrest in the coal fields of eastern Kentucky today, the mines shut down because of environmental control, Ernest and other coal miners fought to keep their jobs alive. These men such as Ernest Creech loved Appalachia and what it stood for, the good morals and the religious way of life that they believed the nation was built on.

Ernest was shot through the back of his truck from amongst a bunch of pickets waiting in lay-way as he left the mines. His death ended the strike, and 12 men were indicted for his murder. One of the women on the jury was the mother of one of the defendants. All were found not guilty. His murder went unsolved leaving Gladys, his wife, a widow and 10 children without a father, the 10th not yet born.

About the Author
Loretta Creech was born in 1949, the second daughter of Ernest and Gladys Neace Creech. She attended Alice Lloyd College on a music scholarship and later transferred to Eastern Kentucky University. She married a boy from central Kentucky and had two sons, Zara and Doug. Through the years, Creech has had to help her mother financially to raise her younger brothers and sisters, the only financial help being her husband's social security. Her mother, Gladys, passed away in 2011.
