In his new book, "Song of Planet Earth" (published by Author House), author Leighton K. Chong delivers a complex, mesmerizing exploration of humanity.

Much of the book's plot and its emotional tapestry were inspired by Chong's own personal experiences.

"In May 2008 I took a trip around the world, seeing the continents unfold below on daytime flights flying west," remembers Chong. "It allowed me to experience the Earth as a whole planet for the first time. I kept a travel diary of my experiences in the cities and regions I visited, and this became the start of my idea for this book."

The novel tells the story of Alvin, a writer on nuclear arms control, who takes an around-the-world tour to experience the planet as a whole. While in Istanbul, he witnesses another tour guest turn over a folder for classified material to some shadowy looking men. He suspects a terrorist plot to steal nuclear weapons from a NATO airbase and tries to alert authorities to stop it. But he has no proof other than the photos he surreptitiously took of the transaction. What can he do?

"My book," shares Chong, "is an exploration into whether humans have the wisdom and will to take the actions necessary for their survival."

An excerpt from the book:

"For my world survey of typical human states of mind, I have identified a passenger in Seat 33A on a Japan Airlines flight heading to Tokyo to join a travel group on a tour around the world. His name is Alvin, that is, Alvin Santori. Once I inhabit his mind with my dual consciousness, he should not feel uncomfortable at all since humans have some capacity for higher-order consciousness and are not unfamiliar with it, although it is not often used by them. Well, here we go!"
