According to whatsonstage.com the blockbuster film LES MISERABLES has surpased 'Mamma Mia!' as the biggest ever opening weekend for a movie musical in the UK. The film, which just picked up a Golden Globe Award for Best Musical or Comedy, brought in a record-breaking three day total of £8.13 million, beating Mamma Mia!'s record of £5.2 million in 2008.

Now playing in 22 international territories, the film recently opened in New Zealand, the Netherlands, Cyprus and Vietnam, with 40 more territories scheduled over the next two months. It's current international gross totals $96.7 million.

Additionally, Les Miserables is the top grossing musical of all time in Korea and Hong Kong and the best opening of a musical in Australia, Spain, Singapore and Trinidad.

Domestically, Les Mis has grossed a total of $109 million. The film opened in the top spot on Christmas Day, taking in $18 million at the box office.

Helmed by The King's Speech's Academy Award-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Following Les Miserables' success, producer Cameron Mackintosh is now rumored to be considering a film adaptation of another of Boublil and Schonberg collaborations, 'Miss Saigon.'
