According to Amazon.com, the 1983 film version of the 'Pirates of Penzance' will be available on DVD, September 14.

Directed by Wilford Leach, the star-studded cast features Kevin Kline as the Pirate King, as well as Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt, George Rose and Rex Smith.  The film contained the entire cast of the 1981 Broadway revival of the 1879 Gilbert & Sullivan comic operetta - with the exception of Lansbury.

The production began in 1980, presented by New York Shakespeare Festival in Central Park and also starring Kevin Kline.  Within several months, 'Pirates of Penzance' and Kline were slated for Broadway, with Joseph Papp as director.  The production was an enormous success, running for 787 performances and winning several Tony awards, including Best Revival.  Kline also received a Tony award, an Obie award and Drama Desk award for his performance.  When a film version was suggested, he was the only actor considered for the role of the Pirate King.
