Justin Timberlake to Perform, Receive Award at MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

MTV announced today that superstar, singer-songwriter, producer and actor, Justin Timberlake is set to solidify his musical legacy on MTV and pop culture history with an unforgettable performance as he takes the stage on the 2013 "MTV Video Music Awards" and joins the exclusive list of legendary artists to receive the "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award." The 2013 "MTV Video Music Awards" airs LIVE from Brooklyn's Barclays Center on August 25 at 9pm ET/PT.

Timberlake has been the architect behind some of the most innovative and popular music videos of the last two decades including the emotionally drenched "Cry Me a River," futuristic dance party, "Rock Your Body," the dark and sultry, "SexyBack," the exquisite black and white rat pack throwback "Suit & Tie," as well as the hauntingly beautiful "Mirrors." In honor of his artistry and innovation, Justin Timberlake will be presented the coveted "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award" joining a prestigious list of past recipients including Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Britney Spears.

As a solo artist and as a member of *NSYNC, Timberlake has collectively won an astounding 14 VMAs, including "Male Artist of the Year" and "Quadruple Threat of the Year" in 2007 and "Best Pop Video" for "Cry Me a River" in 2003, which puts him second only to Madonna in total wins.

Justin Timberlake returns to the VMAs after a hugely successful year that saw his album, The 20/20 Experience debut at the top of the charts around the world. The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2 is set to be released on September 30. Through the years, Justin has thrilled fans with countless memorable performances including 2007's medley of "Lovestoned" and "Give it to Me" with Timbaland and Nelly Furtado, 2006's medley of "My Love" and "SexyBack" and 2002's "Like I Love You." Timberlake is the latest artist to join the previously announced 2013 VMA performers, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke. Additional performers and presenters will be announced at a later date.

Timberlake, along with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, leads this year's VMA pack with six nominations each. Timberlake's nominations include "Video of the Year," "Best Male Video," "Best Pop Video" and "Best Editing" for "Mirrors," while his "Suit & Tie" featuring JAY Z, scored nods for "Best Collaboration," and "Best Direction."

In celebration of the forthcoming performance and award, MTV Hits, MTV's 24-hour music channel will feature a one-hour block of Justin Timberlake music videos and performances today at 3pm ET/PT.

Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke continue their successful years by garnering four nominations. P!nk, and Thirty Seconds to Mars are each up for three Video Music Awards. Other notable nominees receiving multiple 2013 "MTV Video Music Award" nods range from the worlds of Pop, Hip-Hop, EDM, R&B and Rock and include previously nominated artists such as Taylor Swift, Drake,fun., Calvin Harris, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well as first-time VMA nominees Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd and Capital Cities. 2013 VMA winners will take home a special-edition Moonman, re-imagined by world-renowned, Brooklyn-based artist KAWS created exclusively for this year's show.

To build anticipation for the show, MTV launched a successful cross platform social campaign, #RoadToTheVMAs, which features the Moonman in a myriad of iconic locations throughout Brooklyn and NYC. Thus far, the campaign has garnered more nearly 100 million social media impressions to date including over half a million likes on Instagram, 48.5 million impressions on Twitter, nearly 40 million impressions on Facebook and over 1 million impressions on Tumblr.

Since the first "MTV Video Music Awards" aired in 1984, the VMAs instantly earned its reputation for delivering the most popular bands and artists to create the loudest, most influential and at times, the most controversial, annual live celebration of music in the world. The 2012 "MTV Video Music Awards," broadcast live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, was the #1 telecast across all TV for the night of September 6, 2012 in P12-34, scoring a 5.3 P12-34 rating with 6.1 million total viewers. Across the Viacom networks (MTV, VH1, MTV2 and Logo) the simulcast of the premiere averaged 8.0 million total viewers. Encore presentations of the 2012 show on MTV earned a 2.4 P12-34 rating at 10:00 p.m., and a 1.2 P12-34 rating at 12:00 a.m., for a total rating of 8.9 for the evening.

At the time, the telecast was also the #1 social TV event of the year according to Trendrr. With more than 19 million mentions, the 2012 VMAs more than tripled the full-day social-media response of 2012's record breaking telecast. In addition, MTV drove more online streams on this date than any other VMA show ever, and generated nearly a whopping 200 topics trended throughout the night, both in the U.S. and worldwide.

The 2013 "MTV Video Music Awards" will air across MTV's global network of more than 60 channels reaching more than a half-billion households around the world as well as through syndication.
