John Cameron Mitchell Reveals New Details On HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH Sequel
Actor, writer and director John Cameron Mitchell opens up about the impact of acclaimed rock musical HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH as well as shares some new details on the upcoming sequel as part of a new interview.
Discussing the impact of HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH and how the world is evolving in regards to gender definitions, Mitchell relays, "Over the years, people of all stripes have come up to me and said "Hedwig meant a lot to me", and they understood it's a beautiful metaphor. Yes, I'm playing a person who's trans...but she didn't want to be; Hedwig does not stand for trans people, she was mutilated against her will! A woman plays a guy who wants to be a woman as a back up singer. Everyone knows this was a fairy tale, a story that you could interpret in many ways. I'm sure someone somewhere is mad that Neil Patrick Harris is playing a trans person, but it's gone too far. The world is not perfect and it must be sensitized to all of us, but we also know there's intersections between gay, between trans, between drag, lesbian, between cis-men."
As for the sequel to HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH, Mitchell teases, "We've got a good draft. There's only a couple of songs written, and we've been working on it off and on for a couple of years. It's extremely dark, a helluva lot happens in it. Hedwig would never have been on Broadway back when we first did it, and this show would never be on Broadway now. It's dealing with what I'm dealing with right now, which is a lot of deaths in the past year; it's really about mortality: the first half of your life is "Who am I?", and the second half is "I know who I am and I don't have much time left"... so the sequel is about the second half."
Additionally, Mitchell says of the sequel, "One sample line: Hedwig says "My d*ck is huge in Japan"; she just has a connection with the Pacific Rim! It will take some time because of some other films and things happening right now, but it'll keep. No-one is going to steal the Hedwig sequel!"
