ONE CHILD BORN: THE MUSIC OF Laura Nyro

July 6 at 7:00 PM

$15

One woman. Ten characters. The songs of Laura Nyro. Written by Louis Greenstein and Kate Ferber, and directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt, this acclaimed one-woman show celebrates the music and creative force of the late singer-songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer whose pop masterpieces topped the charts in the '60s and '70s. As innovative as Regina Spektor, as intimate as Norah Jones, singer-musician-actor Kate Ferber digs into Laura Nyro's disarming song catalogue in this original 75-minute tour de force. Between each classic song, Ferber portrays a character whose life was touched by Nyro's enduring music.

EMILY ASHER'S GArden Party

CELEBRATES Hoagy Carmichael

July 6 at 9:30

$12

Led by Emily Asher's tenacious trombone and sweet vocals this versatile group from New York City's vibrant early jazz scene bring a hot and charming celebration of one of the first Great American singer songwriters, Hoagy Carmichael. Classics like "Startdust," "Georgia On My Mind," Up A Lazy River" performed with the stylistic flair of Louis Armstrong's enchanting Hot Fives to the funky and soulful music of New Orleans brass bands. "Emily Asher's GArden Party is a deliberately prosaic name deviously calculated to describe a very exciting combo... In traditional jazz, the trombone comes closest to the human voice, although up to now it's rarely been cast as a distinctly female voice... Ms. Asher plays with both grit and grace." - The Wall Street Journal

FLOANNE: Edith Piaf ALIVE

July 11 at 7:30 PM
$20

French singer and actress Floanne recounts the Piaf story. This authentic 'chanteuse' and farm girl opens the door to her culture, by taking a closer look at the legendary 'Little Sparrow'-with that husky, mournful voice so popular in the 1940' and 50's. The performance is a culturally rich and moving presentation that will make you smile, with tunes transporting you to other times and places. Yes, both Floanne and Edith Piaf will be attending the rendezvous in a medley of vintage tunes from their native France... with a modern twist. She will embody the legend, interpreting the melodies from her point of view as a child, imagining Piaf's characters coming to life. Down to earth, sensual and bohemian as her beloved Edith, Floanne will make you discover her poignant music and share her unconventional life.

WE THREE LIZAS

July 15 at 7:00

$20

Escape the summer heat with "Christmas in July" at Joe's Pub! Broadway veteran Peter Flynn stages a concert of the new hit holiday musical We Three Lizas that wowed Chicago audiences this past season. Created by Scott Bradley (book/lyrics) and Alan Schmuckler (music/additional lyrics), We Three Lizas is a magical musical fairy tale set in the queerest of lands in which an embittered designer's mid-life crisis leads to divine intervention by Liza Minnelli. And Liza Minnelli. And Liza Minnelli. TimeOut Chicago said "We loved this holiday tale," naming We Three Lizas the #1 Critics Pick in both its Theatre and Gay & Lesbian sections, calling the show "undeniably original and joyously queer." Chicago Reader's Culture Vulture called it "the holiday musical comedy of my dreams" and NewCity hailed its score as "a buoyant gift wrapped in a melodic, dramatically well-conceived bow." Garnering sold-out houses and critical acclaim, We Three Lizas premiered December 2012, produced by About Face Theatre at Steppenwolf Garage in Chicago. The Joe's Pub concert will feature a number of new songs and story surprises. The concert cast includes Danielle Plisz who originated the role of Liza Was in the Chicago production. Full cast announced soon!
