Abingdon Theatre Company's production of TEXAS HOMOS by Jan Buttram,
award-winning playwright of The Parker Family Circus, will begin previews Friday, January 28 at the June Havoc Theatre, Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex (312 W. 36th Street, First Floor). The official premiere will be on Wednesday, February 2, 2005.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Melvin Bernhardt, TEXAS HOMOS depicts the
hilarious aftermath of a police sting operation in a public restroom, which leaves three local men facing the music as the morning paper announces their arrests.

A prominent doctor, a Methodist preacher and a young wannabe-superstar
dispute the true details of their encounters as their lawyer prepares for Monday's arraignment.

Jan Buttram is an Abingdon Founding Member who began her professional theatre career as an actress with the New Orleans Repertory Theatre under the direction of June Havoc. While touring nationally with The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, she began writing plays. Her works have been produced in New York by the York Theatre, One World Arts Foundation, Circle Rep Lab, La Mama ETC., the New Rude Mechanicals, Lightning Strikes Theatre Co., and Abingdon, which introduced Comedy With Hymns, Glory Girls, Zona, the Ghost of Greenbrier, Private Battles and her The Parker Family Circus, which was selected by Smith & Kraus for The Best Stage Scenes of 2001–2002. Under Abingdon's sponsorship, her play Backwoods won the 1995 Roger L. Stevens Award from the Kennedy Center's Fund for New American Plays.

Melvin Bernhardt received the 1978 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play
for Da, starring Barnard Hughes, and was nominated as Best Director for the
Pulitzer Prize-winning Crimes of the Heart in 1982. His Broadway directing debut was John Guare's Cop-Out, with Linda Lavin and Ron Leibman. His other Broadway credits include Miss Reardon Drinks a Little, Hide and Seek, and Dancing in the End Zone. Off-Broadway he has won three Obie Awards: for Paul Zindel's The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, also a Pulitzer Prize winner.

The cast of TEXAS HOMOS includes Richard Bekins, Reed Birney, Michael Busillo, Karen Culp, David Van Pelt.

Abingdon Theatre Company was founded in 1993 by five artists with one common goal—to develop and produce new plays exclusively by American playwrights. Through the utilization of First Readings, Staged Readings, Workouts, Stage II Productions and Mainstage Productions, the company provides a safe home in which playwrights collaborate with other theatre artists and receive audience feedback.

Performances for TEXAS HOMOS are Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM; Matinees are Saturday at 2:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM.
