James Black and Elizabeth Bunch to Star in AGATHA CHRISTIE'S THE HOLLOW at Alley Theatre; Full Cast Announced!

Beginning in July 2013, the Alley Theatre will produce Agatha Christie's The Hollow during its popular ExxonMobil Summer Chills series. Under the direction of Gregory Boyd, the Alley's resident company of actors will bring to life the colorful cast of characters in Agatha Christie's The Hollow.

Agatha Christie's The Hollow, directed by Gregory Boyd, begins performances Friday, July 5, opens officially Sunday, July 7, and runs through Sunday, August 4 on the Hubbard Stage.

For the past 19 years, the Alley Theatre's ExxonMobil Summer Chills has been a long-running tradition featuring the resident Acting Company, who enjoy bringing a bit of mystery and suspense to Houstonians seeking a cool respite from the summer heat. The Alley's 32nd Summer Chills production is a great way to introduce live theatre to first-timers, giving them an opportunity to thrill in suspenseful moments and unexpected revelations.

A weekend gathering at The Hollow family estate of Lady Lucy and Sir Henry Angkatell explodes in the murder of one of their guests, physician John Cristow. When the good doctor is found shot, almost everyone is suspect with opportunity and motive including his dim but loyal wife, his current mistress, and his film star ex-mistress, who lives on a neighboring estate. Don't miss this classic Christie whodunit filled with brilliantly eccentric characters. Recommended for general audiences.

Agatha Christie's The Hollow features scenic design by Linda Buchanan and costume design by Tricia Barsamian. Lighting design is by Michael Lincoln with sound design by Jill BC DuBoff and assistant director Brandon Weinbrenner.

Dame Agatha Christie, the most famous creator of murder mysteries, was born in 1890 and worked as a hospital dispenser during World War I. Her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920), introduced Hercule Poirot, the Belgian hero who was to appear in many subsequent novels and plays. Over the next 56 years, Christie wrote 66 novels and more than a dozen plays, including Murder on the Orient Express, The Mousetrap, The Unexpected Guest, And Then There Were None, and the Miss Marple mysteries - which served as the basis for the films Murder, She Said and Murder at the Gallop and the inspiration for many television programs. The Alley has produced many of Christie's plays, among them Death on the Nile, Witness for the Prosecution, The Mousetrap,Spider's Web, Towards Zero, and Black Coffee.

David Matranga (Detective Sergeant Penny) is thrilled to be returning to the Alley. He was last seen by Houston audiences as Terry in Stages Repertory Theatre's Dollhouse. Prior to that, he appeared as Steve Baker/Max in Houston Grand Opera's production of Showboat. This past fall, he appeared as Jean in Classical Theatre Company's production of Miss Julie. Diandra Langenbach (Doris) is making her Alley Theatre debut. She is a 2013 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she most recently appeared as Hippolita in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, the Stepmother in Into the Woods and Mattie Fae in August: Osage County.

Emily Neves (Midge Harvey) is in her fifth season as a member of the Resident Acting Company here at the Alley Theatre. Emily has appeared in more than 20 plays at the Alley since 2007. Some favorites include Rock 'n' Roll, Boeing-Boeing, A Behanding in Spokane, Peter Pan, August: Osage County, Clybourne Park, A Few Good Men and many more. Emily is also a voice actor for Sentai Filmworks, Sony Pictures and FUNimation Studios. Behind the Voice Actors nominated Emily for three of their annual Anime Voice Acting awards for 2012: Female Voice Actor of the Year; Best Female Lead in a film or special as Inga in "Un-go," which Emily won; and Best Female in a Supporting Role in a film or special as Trig in "Starship Troopers: Invasion." Emily recently graduated cum laude from Texas State University with a BFA in Acting. While studying at Texas State in 2012, Emily performed at the Kennedy Center as part of a national finalist team in the Irene Ryan acting competition. Emily is a native Houstonian and a proud AEA member.

Melissa Pritchett (Gerda Cristow) is an Alley Company Artist recently appearing in Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club as Mrs. Hudson/Lucy O'Malley, The Elephant Man as Pinhead/ Whore/Miss Sandwich/Countess, Death of a Salesman as The Woman, Noises Off as Brooke Ashton, Ether Dome as Elizabeth Whitman Morton, Pygmalion as Clara Eynsford-Hill, Amadeus as Constanze Weber, Boeing-Boeing as Gretchen, Farnsworth Invention as Agnes, Rock 'n' Roll as Gillian/Magda, Eurydice as Little Stone, Cyrano de Bergerac as Lise, Othello as Bianca, Hitchcock Blonde as Blonde, Much Ado About Nothing as Ursula and The Pillowman as Mother. Todd Waite (Gudgeon) is in his 13th season as an Alley Company Artist. Most recently seen in Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club as Sherlock Holmes, The Elephant Man as Carr Gomm/Belgian Policeman/London Policeman, A Few Good Men as Capt. Isaac Whitaker, Death of a Salesman as Uncle Ben, and November as Archer Brown, he has appeared in over 60 productions including five Christmas seasons of the one-man show, The Santaland Diaries. Other shows include: Noises Off as Frederick Fellowes, Pygmalion as Henry Higgins, Sherlock Holmes as Sherlock Holmes, Rock 'n' Roll as Jan, The Goat or Who is Sylvia? as Martin, Arsenic and Old Lace as Mortimer Brewster, Hapgood as Kerner, Deathtrap as Sydney, Art as Ivan, Stones in His Pockets as Jake, The Devil's Disciple as Burgoyne, The Mousetrap as Christopher Wren and The 39 Steps as Richard Hannay. He has directed several Canadian premieres and was the resident director for Cirque du Soleil's 'O' in Las Vegas. A recipient of the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship for master actor/teachers, Mr. Waite holds a BFA in Acting and an MFA in Directing and is currently an adjunct professor for both the University of Houston's Graduate Program in Theatre Education and BFA Theatre Program. His private students attend Juilliard, Yale, The Royal Scottish Academy, The Stella Adler School, as well as Stage Door, Interlochen, and Houston's High School for the Performing Arts.

Linda Buchanan (Scenic Design) has designed hundreds of stage productions at regional theatres throughout the country and abroad. She has received the Merritt Award for Design and Collaboration, Jefferson Awards for Scene Design for House at Goodman Theatre, Black Snow at Goodman Theatre, and I Hate Hamlet at Royal George, and a Helen Hayes Award for Dancing at Lughnasa at Arena Stage. Recent design work includes Race at Goodman Theatre, Lombardi at Milwaukee Rep, The 39 Steps at Cleveland Play House, Syracuse Stage, and Indiana Repertory Theatre and The Gospel According to James at Indiana Rep and Victory Gardens Theatre. Notable past projects include the American Premiere of House & Garden at the Goodman, the musical adaptation of Wings at Goodman and NY Public Theatre, and the premiere production of Marvin's Room and 10 subsequent regional productions, and commercial productions in New York and London. Buchanan was Resident Designer at Court Theatre from 1976-1984 and Design Director of R.D. Design Associates from 1985-1989 where her work included the State of Illinois Center dedication ceremony and over 100 environments for corporate theatre and special events. Buchanan is Associate Dean for Curricular Development at The Theatre School at DePaul University, where she is also Head of the Scene Design program. She has also taught at the University of Chicago and Columbia College. Her work has been published in Interior Design, Contract, Exhibit Builder, American Theatre and TCI (Theatre Crafts International), and ED (Entertainment Design).

Tricia Barsamian (Costume Design) Credits include Black Coffee and The Mousetrap at Alley Theatre, Yank! Michael's career spans over 30 years and 300 productions. His Broadway credits include Copenhagen, Skylight, and More To Love and associate designs for Guys and Dolls, Six Degrees of Separation, City of Angels, and Anything Goes. Michael's many Off-Broadway designs include People Be Heard, Mr. Goldwyn, The Bubbly Black Girl..., If Love Were All, Defying Gravity, Bunny Bunny, Swingtime Canteen and You Should Be So Lucky. He has designed for resident companies around the country with long associations at Indiana Rep, Cleveland Play House, Los Angeles Ballet, Santa Fe Opera, and Studio Theatre DC. Awards include L.A. Brandon Weinbrenner (Assistant Director) has joined the Alley Theatre artistic team as Resident Assistant Director. This is his fourth production as assistant director, having previously worked on Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, The Elephant Man and Few Good Men. Past assistant directing credits include Red and How to Write a New Book for the Bible at Berkeley Rep where he was the Bret C. Harte Directing Fellow. Most recently Brandon finished producing the 2013 Out of the Loop Fringe Festival in his hometown of Dallas, Texas. As an actor, Brandon has appeared in productions at the Guthrie Theater, The Children's Theatre Co., and Illusion Theater in Minneapolis, as well at WaterTower Theatre and Undermain Theatre in Dallas. Brandon is a graduate of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Acting Training Program.
