The TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman's Chinese Theatre) has been the home of the most important, star powered red carpet movie premieres and special events, where Hollywood's biggest and brightest talents have come to watch their movies. The most famous movie theatre on the globe is worldrenowned for its unique forecourt of the stars, featuring cement hand and footprints of major movie stars, from
Marilyn Monroe to
Brad Pitt, and numerous stars from all eras of Hollywood. In addition to being a major international tourist destination (it attracts more annual visitors than the 500-year-old Sistine Chapel in Rome), The TCL Chinese Theatre, and its six adjacent cinemas, the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, are everyday working movie theatres, hosting millions of moviegoers year round.
Proceeds from the auction will go to a fund dedicated to the restoration and preservation of this iconic landmark so that future generations can enjoy it for years to come.
A tremendous highlight of this auction is an extremely limited series of hand and footprint impressions created from the original impressions in front of the Chinese Theatre. Lots include the impressions of Sid Grauman (pictured above), Cecil B. DeMille,
Judy Garland,
Humphrey Bogart,
Frank Sinatra,
Jane Russell,
Marilyn Monroe (pictured right) and
Gene Kelly. Each of the lots is #1, in an intended limited series of 4. They are each estimated to sell for $4,000 - $6,000.
Also from the Chinese Theatre, a large lot of over 1000 seats from the main theatre that were created in the similar style and design of the original 1927 chairs, expected to sell for $80,000 - $120,000 (pictured below); A vintage original Chinese chair, expected to sell for $600 - $800; a vintage Stubergh Chinese waxwork figure from the lobby of the Chinese Theatre, designed by Katherine and Otto Stubergh of Stubergh wax creators, estimated to se ll for $600 - $800; An original 1927 painting from the Chinese Theatre lobby, estimated to sell for $600 - $800; 3 lots containing copper shingles from the original Chinese pagoda style roof of the theatre, each lot is estimated to sell for $300 - $500 and a stone pedestal from the courtyard garden of the Chinese Theatre, estimated to sell for $300 - $500.
