Departing from the show's regular format, host Bryant Gumbel leads correspondents Mary Carillo, Frank Deford, Jon Frankel, Bernard Goldberg, Andrea Kremer and Soledad O'Brien in a spirited roundtable discussion of 2013, touching on everything from favorite stories of the year to the interviews and segments that had the greatest impact on them.

In 2013, REAL SPORTS traveled the world to meet inspiring and memorable people, among them: Kelly Slater, the most decorated professional surfer in history; Chris Paul, the all-star point guard of the Los Angeles Clippers, who is a leader on and off the court; Alex Thomson, who competes in the Vendee Globe Sailboat Race, a grueling single-handed yacht endurance race around the world; Bill O'Brien, who succeeded legendary coach Joe Paterno as head football coach of Penn State University in the wake of the child sex abuse scandal; Diamond Dallas Page, the legendary wrestling superstar who developed a unique yoga program to alleviate the lasting damage to his body; and Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight champion who has toured the country starring in his own one-man show.

REAL SPORTS also looked at big issues, covering: the controversy surrounding Chivas USA, the Los Angeles-area MLS franchise; the role of the Ultra soccer fans in Egypt's revolution; violent attacks on game officials in America; a teenager's campaign to rediscover the Negro Leagues; the professional video gaming industry dubbed eSports; the innovative extreme marketing strategy of Red Bull; and the uplifting story of Jaclyn Murphy and the Friends of Jaclyn foundation that helps match sick children with collegiate sports programs.

REAL SPORTS has won the Sports Emmy® for Outstanding Sports Journalism 15 times and has received 25 Sports Emmy® Awards overall. It was the sole sports program recognized by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication with a 2012 George F. Peabody Award for broadcast excellence. In addition, it is the only sports program ever honored with a duPont Award, first in 2005 and again in 2012.
