HBO has renewed Aaron Sorkin's THE NEWSROOM for a third and final season, according to Variety.

The pick-up comes over four months since the second season wrapped, with the highly-acclaimed drama's future uncertain.

"'The Newsroom' is classic Aaron Sorkin - smart, riveting and thought-provoking," HBO's Michael Lombardo told Variety. "I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember."

The network and Sorkin had been in negotiations to continue the series for months, with a deal unable to be reached until now. "I need time to think about it," Sorkin told IndieWire in September when asked about the possibility of a third season.

The second season of the show, lead by Emmy winner Jeff Daniels, was written as a potential series finale.

From the mind of Sorkin, creator of The West Wing and screenwriter of The Social Network and Moneyball, comes The Newsroom a behind the scenes look at the people who make a night cable news program.

Focusing on a network anchor, played by Daniels, his new executive producer, Emily Mortimer, the newsroom staff, John Gallagher, Jr, Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, and their boss, Sam Waterston, the series tracks their quixotic mission to do the news well in The Face of corporate and commercial obstacles, not to mention their own personal entanglements.
