Glimmerglass Opera Festival Opens Friday 7/9

Glimmerglass Opera's 2010 Festival opens this weekend with Puccini's Tosca on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Aaron Copland's The Tender Land on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The company opens its final two productions next weekend. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro opens July 17 and Handel's Tolomeo opens July 18. All four new productions will run in rotation in the Alice Busch Opera Theater in Cooperstown from July 9 through August 24, 2010.

Tosca is directed by Ned Canty and conducted by David Angus, Glimmerglass Opera's Music Director. Lise Lindstrom sings Tosca in her role and company debut and Adam Diegel sings the role of Cavaradossi in his company debut. Also in a company debut, Lester Lynch sings the role of Scarpia. Members of the 2010 Glimmerglass Opera Young American Artists Program, the company's apprentice program for young singers, make up the remainder of the cast. Angelotti is sung by Aaron Sorensen, Sacristan is sung by Robert Kerr and DomiNick Rodriquez sings Spoletta. Zachary Nelson sings Sciarrone, Xi Wang sings the role of the Young Shepherd, and Jonathan Lasch sings the role of the Jailor. Donald Eastman designed the sets for the productions, Matthew Pachtman designed costumes and Jeff Harris designed lighting.

The Tender Land is directed by Tazewell Thompson and conducted by Stewart Robertson, Glimmerglass Opera Music Director Emeritus. Written by Copland for young singers, The Tender Land has been cast with members of the Young American Artists Program. Rebecca Jo Loeb performs the role of Beth Moss, Stephanie Foley Davis sings the role of Ma Moss, Chris Lysack sings the role of Mr. Splinters and Lindsay Russell sings Laurie Moss. Top is sung by Mark Diamond and Martin is sung by Andrew Stenson. Joseph Barron sings the role of Grandpa Moss, Jamilyn Manning-White sings the role of Mrs. Jenks and Will Liverman sings the role of Mr. Jenks. Claire Shackleton sings Mrs. Splinters. Donald Eastman designed sets, Andrea Hood designed costumes and Robert Wierzel designed lighting.
