GLEE: Season 2, Episode 12 - 'Silly Love Songs'

What's going down?

Puck contemplates what he has learnt from life so far. 1. Never punch a cop in the face. 2. You can't choose love, love chooses you. The latest object of his affections is Lauren. In order for her to join Glee, he gave her 'seven minutes in heaven' and has been hooked even since. Unfortunately for him, Lauren's conclusion afterwards was that he wasn't very good and was "kinda scrawny". It's almost Valentine's Day and he's determined to win her over. It's not looking like it's going to be easy, though, due to the barrage of insults she sends his way.

Since the football team won the Conference Championship, Finn is once again Mr Popularity and
he sure is happy about it, especially since all the ladies now want him. Who will he choose to be his
valentine? Well, he already has his heart set on winning Quinn again, "Maybe the reason it didn't
work out with Rachel was because I was never over Quinn," he contemplates. He decides that he'll
be able to steal her from Sam if only he can get her to kiss him again.

Whilst Kurt is being all cynical about Valentine's Day, Blaine admits that it's his favourite holiday and that he's just a "hopeless romantic". He's decided that this year he's going to do something "really radical". He admits to Kurt that there's a guy he likes, who despite only knowing him a little while, he thinks his feelings are starting to change into something a little deeper. How is he going to reveal this? Through song, of course. It seems obvious that from that speech and the fact that he knows Kurt's coffee order that it might just be he who is the object of Blaine's affections.

At Glee, Schue wants the club to pair up and sing a song to each other especially for Valentine's Day. In other words he wants them to find "the world's greatest love song". Finn takes the opportunity to point out that a whole week has gone by without any of the club getting slushied and says it's all thanks to him leading the football team to victory. He also tells them that he's setting up a kissing booth in order to raise money for the club. "Don't even act like you wanna help Glee club out, you just wanna kiss a bunch of girls," quips Mercedes and Santana is equally scathing. Finn asks her if she ever gets tired of putting other people down. She says she doesn't and that's why everyone loves her. "Actually, you're just a bitch," says Lauren. Ouch.

Hurt by the comments in Glee, Santana is crying into Brittany's arms in the corridor whilst Puck asks Lauren out to Breadsticks for Valentine's. "You seriously think it's that easy? I'm not desperate," she tells him and says that if he wants her he better be prepared to woo her.

Over at Dalton, Blaine has called an emergency meeting for The Warblers council. Blaine tells the
boys that he's in love and that he needs their help to serenade this individual. Kurt's face drops,
when he realises that it isn't him and it's in fact someone who works at Gap. Blaine plans to name
the performance the 'Gap Attack'. Whilst The Warblers may not have performed informally since
1927, they agree that, for Blaine's sake, they'll do it.

At Rachel's house, she, Kurt and Mercedes are having a slumber party to moan about how tragic
their love lives are. Rachel insists that it isn't over for her and Finn and that she's going to go to
his kissing booth with a hundred dollar bill and then he'll be forced to kiss her one hundred times.
Mercedes tries to talk some sense: "the three of us are divas. Look at our idols; Whitney, Barbra,
Patti LuPone. They all became stars while they were single". The three agree to "fly solo" for a while, in order to put their pain and loneliness into their talent.

At Glee it's time for the first of the love songs as Puck performs "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Queen, in
honour of Lauren. I thought you were meant to be wooing her, Puck? Not offending her. Santana
looks rather angry once she realises that there's something going down between the two. When
Pucks asks Lauren's opinion, she tells him, "That's the first time anyone has sung me a love song and it made me feel like crap."

At Finn's kissing booth, all the girls in McKinley are going wild. Quinn corners him and says she knows he's only doing it because she's the only girl in school who won't kiss him. The pair share a flirty exchange but she insists she won't kiss him. Poor Sam catches this and susses that there's something going on between Finn and his girlfriend. Sam goes to the library to confront Quinn about it but she simply brushes it off, saying that Sam is the only boy for her. Yeah, right, Quinn. He says it's odd, though, that she hasn't kissed Finn yet. The two argue before it's agreed after rehearsal she kisses Finn.

Before Quinn gets her chance to kiss Finn, Rachel marches up to the booth. Finn asks her if she can handle kissing him but now that she's decided to go off boys for the time being she is more than able to. After he kisses her on the cheek she's greatly unimpressed. She insists it's just because it wasn't a dollar kiss but Finn says he knew that she wasn't over him. "I still love you, OK. Is that what you want to hear?" she blurts out. She tries to beg for his forgiveness but he says he won't take her back. He does hand her the Christmas present he was going to give her; a necklace with a star pendant. He tells her that she's right to want to be alone, as she's better than everyone else and she needs to let her talent shine: "Just because I can't be with you, doesn't mean I don't believe in you."

Artie and Mike are discussing how unlikely it was that the pair of them would end up dating "two
of the raddest girls in school". Mike doesn't know how they did it; Artie does - it's because
they're "dope". Cue the pair performing "PYT" by Michael Jackson moving from school corridor to
choir room, where everyone is up on their feet.

Santana has bought herself some Valentine's Day bling and hands Puck the receipt, saying he can
reimburse her for it and take her out to dinner to Breadsticks. She tells him that she'll stop being
a bitch, for example she "won't tell Lauren to look out for poachers who might mistake her for the
endangerEd White rhino". Unfortunately for her, Lauren overhears and once Santana makes a few
too many bitchy comments, Lauren throws her around the corridor a bit. Well, let's be honest, she
had it coming to her. "Please go out with me. Just please," Puck begs Lauren after witnessing the
fight. "You make a formal presentation and I'll consider it."

Quinn steps up to the kissing booth with Sam in tow. When their lips break apart we get some lovely shots of fireworks going off. Sam, however, is satisfied that there's nothing between the two of them. When Quinn runs back to 'get her purse' she whispers in Finn's ear to meet her tomorrow at the auditorium.

Over at The Gap, The Warblers are preparing for 'The Gap Attack'. The object of Blaine's affections? Some guy called Jeremiah, who has rather a lot of hair. "If he and I got married The Gap would give us 50% discount", he muses. The group perform "When I Get You Alone" by Robin Thicke and whilst the other customers love the performance, poor Jeremiah looks slightly embarrassed and poor Kurt looks lovesick.

"Was it too much?" Blaine asks Kurt after. Well, maybe slightly, Blaine. When Jeremiah leaves the
store he tells Blaine that he got fired; "you can't just bust a groove in the middle of somebody else's workplace." He didn't love it either, as no one at his work knew he was gay. "Let's just be clear here, Blaine, we got coffee twice, we're not dating".

At Glee, Santana is feeling left out amongst all the couples. "How is this possible? I'm the hottest
piece of action at this school and here I am, it's nearly Valentine's, and I'm single." When Finn walks into the room she notices he and Quinn giving each other the eyes and realises that they've been fooling around. After all, she's bound to know what cheating looks like as she does it all the time. She vows to get revenge. To do so she goes to the nurse's office, finds someone with Mono, kisses him and then kisses Finn. She hopes if he does hook up with Quinn then she'll get it too. Santana, on the other hand, has had Mono so many times that it's turned to Stereo apparently.

Puck and Lauren are in the library, probably the first time he's actually stepped inside one. He's still
trying to win over her but she says singing her an "offensive song" just doesn't quite cut it. "I don't
think you're ready for this jelly," she tells him. In a somewhat romantic gesture, he pulls out a plastic ring, gets down on one knee and asks her if she'll go to Breadsticks with him tomorrow night. "I like your style, Puckerman, I dine at 8."

Quinn and Finn meet in the auditorium like planned. She tells him that this makes her a cheater,
which is exactly the thing that he dumped her for and that hurt him so badly. Of course now that
Finn isn't on the receiving end he doesn't seem to mind so much. She tells him that she's not going
to break up with Sam until she's completely sure what's going to happen with her and Finn. "Do you
think you can love two people at one time?" she asks. "Not totally. You have to choose eventually." The two kiss anyway.

Blaine is no longer excited about the prospect of Valentine's Day. "I don't think I've ever made that
big a fool out of myself," he comments on yesterday's 'Gap Attack'. "I just can't believe I made it all
up in my head." Kurt goes on to admit that he too made things up in his head; as he thought that
the guy Blaine wanted to sing to was in fact him. Blaine looks clueless and admits he doesn't know
what he's doing. "I really, really care about you but as you and about twenty mortified shoppers saw, I'm not very good at romance". He'd rather they'd remain friends so he doesn't screw up what they have already. Later on we see Puck making out with one of the Breadsticks' waitresses to try and get over the pain of being stood up by Lauren.

At Glee the next day Finn lets everyone know he has raised $324 by kissing every girl in
school. He isn't looking too well for it. Tina is next up to sing her duet and she performs a
rather "powerful" version of "My Funny Valentine" as she ends up on the floor in tears. Finn and
Quinn both asked to be excused to go to the nurse's office. "Let me have a guess; you have a sore
throat, your glands are swollen and you're feverish," Santana pipes up. "It sounds like you have
Mono, also known as the kissing disease". It becomes obvious to the whole club that the two have
been fooling around after all. In the nurse's office Quinn contemplates that nothing good comes of
cheating. "I'm not done with us yet," Finn tells her but she insists that it needs to stop. "Nothing can happen between us until I figure out what's going on with me and Sam and you figure out what's going on with you and Rachel."

The next day Puck confronts Lauren about standing him up. He likes her, he says, "because you're a bigger bad ass than I am". She asks if she can be honest with him: "I'm not just looking for someone to fool around with" - if he really likes her he's going to have to take it slow. He agrees and so the pair decide to have their Breadsticks date after all, "as friends," Lauren adds.

Finn is still waiting in the nurse's office when Rachel turns up to help look after him. She once
again tries to change his mind by telling him that it meant so much to her that he chose her over
Quinn, "girls like me don't get chosen over girls like her very much." She questions him if he did
kiss Quinn after all and when he admits he did she asks him what it felt like. "Fireworks," he tells her. She looks heartbroken when she doesn't get a response when she asks him if he saw them when he kissed her. "I know there's nothing here for me any more," she declares and vows to move on. Yeah, right. She then bursts into Katy Perry's "Firework" with various montages of her looking empowered.

It's finally Valentine's Day and the whole club are at Breadsticks. Kurt has decided that The Warblers are going to throw an impromptu performance at their "Lonely Hearts Club Dinner". "To all the singles out there, this is our year," he tells them. The club perform "Silly Love Songs" by "Wings" to round off the episode.

11 o'clock number

I really enjoyed tonight's musical offerings, especially in comparison to the past few weeks. "Fat
Bottomed Girls" was your typical Puck song and it suited him down to a tee, whilst "PYT" was a great collaboration between Artie's voice and Mike's dance moves. Despite the fact that 'The Gap Attack' failed to produce the desired effects, "When I Get You Alone" was a rousing performance and Blaine is fast becoming my favourite performer on the show. It may have seemed that "Firework" was put in there very tenuously but as ever Rachel performed it well, though I'd like to see her do a number where she really mixes it up. Finally, the second performance from The Warblers was the perfect way to end the episode.

Kurt on his friendship with Blaine: "So it´s like When Harry met Sally, but I get to play Meg Ryan."

Overall

Why oh why can't the powers that be at Glee let 'Blurt' finally get together? I've had more than
enough of the whole Finn/Rachel/Quinn/Sam/Puck fandango and would really really just like to
see Kurt and Blaine finally get together; after all, Kurt more than deserves it. I'm undecided on my
thoughts of Puck and Lauren; I find it hard to believe that he'd go for a girl like her, even if she is
a complete bad ass. Though having said that, Puck could do with being brought under the thumb
and maybe she's just the girl to take him in hand. Did anyone else notice the look between Sam and Santana during "Silly Love Songs"? The chances that the two hook up for revenge and looking pretty likely. Oh, the relationship dramas of Glee.
