Fiona Kelly and Sabine Ducrot Announce Recital at Cit Cork School of Music

Irish flautist Fiona Kelly, hailed by the New York Times as a player with "impressive technique and elegant musicianship", is principal flute of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. In this recital, Fiona will be accompanied by pianist Sabine Ducrot for a programme featuring famous works by Debussy and Franck, plus a selection of delightful pieces for flute by three lesser known French composers.

Fiona Kelly completed her Master's degree at The Juilliard School, New York, studying with principal flute of the New York Philharmonic, Robert Langevin. She won first prize in The Juilliard School Flute Competition and made her Lincoln Center debut performing Bernstein's 'Halil' with The Juilliard Orchestra at The Peter Jay Sharp Theatre.

She began her studies at the Cork School of Music with her mother Evelyn Grant and completed her Bachelor of Music studies at Trinity College of Music, London, with Ms. Anna Noakes. While in London she won numerous awards including 1st Prize in the British Flute Society International Competition, the Royal Overseas League Sussex Prize and the Royal Philharmonic Society's Julius Isserlis Scholarship.

Fiona has performed concertos with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Jönköpings Sinfonietta, Locrian Ensemble, Irish Chamber Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland at Köln Philharmonie, Liszt Academy Grand Hall Budapest, Heidelberg Festival and St. Martin in the Fields London, with conductors such as Thomas Dausgaard, Thierry Fischer, Andrew Manze and Alexander Verdernikov.

She was a soloist with Håkan Hardenberger, Antje Weithaas and Uri Caine in the Swedish Chamber Orchestra's Brandenburg Project performing the 2nd and 5th concertos and premiering new concerti by Steven Mackey and Uri Caine, touring throughout Germany, Hungary and Poland. Fiona looks forward to a future performance of this project at the Rheingau Festival and recording these works for the BIS label in 2017.

Her orchestral experiences range from being offered the post of principal flute with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra of Ireland at the age of 22, to performances as a guest flautist with the New York Philharmonic.

Pianist and flautist Sabine Ducrot has appeared as a soloist with some of France's leading orchestras including the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre de Radio France. She has performed at major international venues, particularly in Paris, in Salle Pleyel, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Salle Gaveau and Salle Cortot. She has recorded and performed live broadcasts for French radio and television and for Lyric FM.

Sabine's exceptional musical talents were evident from an early age when, at the tender age of twelve she was broadcasted on French television performing her first flute concerto with the "Orchestre d'Île de France". At thirteen, Sabine won the French 'Young Musician of the Future' competition on flute and the following year won the same competition on piano. This gave her the opportunity to perform as a soloist with "Orchestre de Radio France" at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in both instruments. At sixteen she secured a place to study at the prestigious "Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris" - in flute, and the following year in piano, the first student in the history of the conservatoire to be accepted in two principal instruments, and qualified with the coveted "Premier Prix".

Sabine's many international competitions prizes include finalist in the "Maria Canals" (Barcelona); semi-finalist in "Jean-Pierre Rampal" (Paris) and 2nd Prize at Vierzon International "Sonatas" competitions; finalist at the Chopin piano competition (Majorca); Claude Kahn and Wurmser international piano competitions and the Brussels European Young Musician competition where she won prizes in both flute and piano. She was awarded the "Medal Eric Satie" from the French Minister for Culture for exceptional musical achievements.

Just before moving to Ireland, Sabine was appointed principal flautist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de France and professor of flute at the Conservatoire National de Region in Paris. Sabine currently lives in Cork where she is a lecturer in flute and piano at CIT Cork School of Music. Sabine has remarkably continued to have a career on both instruments. As a pianist she has enjoyed collaborating with pianist Michael Joyce; together they have toured as a piano duo and in 2012 gave electrifying performance throughout Ireland of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring with dancers from the Fidget Feet Dance company. Sabine and Michael have also toured as a flute and piano duo supported by the arts council, music network-performance and touring award, Culture Ireland award. She's performed regularly in Ireland and abroad (London, Paris, Cologne, Spain, Switzerland, Italy).

She lately has formed a new duo with violinist Katherine Hunka (leader of the ICO) and they performed at the Crawford art Gallery series. Sabine also performs also regularly with her two sons, violinists and flautists Eoin and Cian, as a duo or trio.
