Everyman Theatre Names New Associate Artistic Director

Everyman Theatre is pleased to announce Noah Himmelstein as its first Associate Artistic Director. In this newly created position, Mr. Himmelstein will work closely with the creative team, shaping programming and expanding the organization's artistic reach in the region. Mr. Himmelstein's new role will officially begin on September 1, 2016.

Himmelstein will split his time between Baltimore and New York, acting as an ambassador for Everyman, building new relationships with actors, designers, and directors, while remaining deeply committed to fostering Everyman's Resident Company of artists from the Baltimore/Washington DC area. During his first year of tenure at Everyman he will collaborate with Tony Award nominees Michael John LaChiusa and Ellen Fitzhugh on a re-imagining of their musical Los Otros. He will also consult on new play development, artist collaborations, and assist with season selection.

"Noah is a bright emerging voice in American Theatre that should be nurtured and valued," said Founding Artistic Director Vincent M. Lancisi. "He is the perfect complement to Everyman's existing aesthetic and I am thrilled to welcome him back home to Baltimore. He brings a fresh and smart perspective to Everyman's artistic team and I am truly excited by the ways Noah might steer us in the future."

"Everyman is the theatre that gave me my formative experiences with Miller, Albee and August Wilson. I was welcomed like family by the staff, Resident Company and community when I had the opportunity to direct An Inspector Calls this past fall. I feel lucky to have an artistic home to cultivate new works and classics in my hometown."

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Mr. Himmelstein attended George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Maryland for high school and visited Everyman on field trips as a student there. Later, he attended Emerson College in Boston, where he received a BA in Theatre Studies with an emphasis on acting and directing. He made his Everyman debut when he directed An Inspector Calls, the season opener of the theatre's record-breaking 25th anniversary year.

Mr. Himmelstein's work primarily consists of directing large-scale music theatre pieces, new American plays, and intimate chamber works. His work has been seen throughout the country and internationally in Europe. His most recent production of Jonathan Tolins's new play, The Forgotten Woman, began performances on May 31 at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor New York. Mr. Himmelstein also directed Andrew Lippa's concept opera I Am Anne Hutchinson/I Am Harvey Milk at Strathmore and Lincoln Center, starring Kristin Chenoweth. The productions were hailed as NY Magazine and LA Magazine Critics Picks, as well as a Playbill "Unforgettable Experience of the Year. "

Other recent productions include Bleeding Love, which played a sold-out six week run at the Fredericia Theatre in Denmark, Things I Left On Long Island off-Broadway where it was a Time Out NY Critics Pick, Loving Leo at the Weston Playhouse in Vermont, and the world premiere of Michael Korie and Conrad Cumming's opera, Positions 1956 at Urban Arias in DC. Noah has worked as Assistant Director to James Lapine and Bartlett Sher on productions on Broadway and off-Broadway.

Everyman Theatre is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive. An agency of the Department of Business & Economic Development, the MSAC provides financial support and technical assistance to non-profit organizations, units of government, colleges and universities for arts activities. Funding for the Maryland State Arts Council is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
