Choreographers from KINKY BOOTS & More Present New Work at 6th Bi-Annual BC Beat Showcase, 11/11

Broadway's most daring, curious, and talented artists are preparing to gather at Cielo for the Fall 2013 BC Beat on Monday November 11th, the showcase and dance party with it's own rules for sharing work and connecting artists. Doors open at 7pm and guests are welcomed by the evening's choreographers, Charlie Sutton, Cindy Salgado, Caleb Teicher, Kyle Mullins, Tricia Brouk, Josh Assor, Rickey Tripp, Jennifer Jancuska, and performers including Daniel Watts, Jennifer Locke, Ephraim Sykes, Aurelia Michael, Voltaire Wade-Greene, Masi Yahya James, Amber Jackson, Elizabeth Burke, Macy Sullivan, Ryan VanDenBoom, Matthew Steffens, Heather Hamilton, Shiloh Goodin, Liz Piccoli, Paul Romero, Borris York, Rachel Guest, Matthew Oaks and Michael Williams as Broadway veteran Justin Johnson curates music.

As a catalyst for professional development between choreographers, directors, performers and creative team members, BC Beat provides a platform for curious and innovative theatrical choreographers to share story driven work in an inspired environment of heightened energy and intimate support. The evening is an exciting mix of choreographed work and dance party fun where the dance floor is uniquely shared with all in attendance. Considered by participants as a true gift to the Broadway community, members of the BC Beat family describe the experience in three words.

"Rad. Ace. Now." - Declan Bennett
Declan Bennett took up residence as the original BC Beat DJ for two years while writing, composing and performing on Broadway in several shows, including AMERICAN IDIOT and RENT before landing the lead role in the West End production of ONCE. During his BC Beat residency, Declan presented a piece in collaboration with director/choreographer Steven Hoggett, which was then developed into a full production for Ars Nova.

"Exhilarating. Inspirational. Rewarding" - Marcos Santana
Marcos Santana was the very first choreographer to say yes to BC Beat. His presence and support for BC Beat amid working and traveling non-stop on projects including the upcoming Broadway production of ROCKY has been pivotal in BC Beat's connection with Broadway's newest generation of creators.

"Community. Creativity. Party." - Richard J. Hinds
Ricky's piece for BC Beat was the finale performance and led everyone, including choreographers, performers and guests, onto the dance floor as Declan began his set and the dance party portion of the night continued. With a smile and drink in hand he explained how BC Beat pushed him beyond his comfort zone which he loved and left him wanting more. As an Associate Director for numerous Broadway productions including NEWSIES and the upcoming THE LAST GOODBYE, the opportunity to harness the spirit and instinct of BC Beat to create and explore with freedom was recognized as essential.

In just two years, since its premiere in the spring of 2011, BC Beat has created a family of 40 choreographers, each with a unique tie to Broadway and a dedication to developing theatrical work including Stephen Hoggett, Richard Hinds, Patrick McCollum, John Carraffa, Brooke Wendle, Ron Todorowski, Daniel Watts, Marcos Santana, Camille A. Brown, Al Blackstone, Jennifer Jancuska, Jon Rua, and Cherice Barton.

BC Beat returns to Cielo (18 Little West 12th Street) on Monday November 11, 2013. Doors open at 7pm. Online tickets ($8) are now available through Brown Paper Tickets. Tickets can also be purchased at the door ($12 cash only).

BC Beat has been conceived and created by Jennifer Jancuska and is sponsored by LaDuca Shoes, Broadway Connection, Dirty Sugar, Michael Cummo Photography, and Suz Roach Design. Emily Hayes is the BC Beat stage manager alongside lighting designer, Steve Gonzalez, sound designer Justin Johnson and assistant Lili Froehlich.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

The program for Monday November 11th stays true to the BC Beat mission by introducing new work by theatrical choreographers Charlie Sutton, Tricia Brouk, Caleb Teicher, Josh Assor, Kyle Mullins, Cindy Salgado, Rickey Tripp and Jennifer Jancuska.

Charlie Sutton

Charlie Sutton is currently performing in the Broadway hit Kinky Boots. For the past 10 years, Charlie has worked with Tony Award winning directors and choreographers in nine Broadway shows, including How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (Mr. Jenkins), Lysistrata Jones (u/s Xander, Cinesias, Uardo, Harold), Catch Me If You Can, Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown (Telephone Repairman, u/s Carlos), The Addams Family, Crybaby (Male Trio), La Cage Aux Folles, and Wicked, whose creativity has influenced his use of story telling though movement. Choreography credits include the New York premier of The Big Show (WAT), 35 MM (54 Below), Flesh and Spirit (MMAC Theater), Rocketman (Unexpected Boy), the opening credits for the Pilot "DINE," Broadway Bares- Spring Fever! and Broadway in Hoboken.

Tricia Brouk

Tricia recently wrote, directed and choreographed 50 Shades of F****D Up, A Musical Parody, for the stage and has now adapted it for the screen. The feature film is being produced by Muchmore Productions and stars Andrew Keegan. Her work has been recently seen at Joe's Pub, Atlantic Stage 2, and in the ongoing New York production of Broadway Varietease, which she directs and choreographs. Director/Choreographer credits also include I Love You, You're Perfect Now Change, Bingo, The Winning Musical, Erotic Broadway;Vintage Variety, Frankie and Debbie Live at the Martini Lounge and Popesical, which played the Lyric Theater in LA.

Tricia's choreography in John Turturro's feature film Romance and Cigarettes, which provided the opportunity to create dances for James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Christopher Walken, Steve Buscemi, Bobbie Canavale, and Eddie Izzard, won the Golden Thumb award from Roger Ebert. Her choreography can also be seen in Dennis Leary's Rescue Me, The Hoax, starring Richard Gere, in the short film Rolling in The Ring of Fire, which she wrote, directed, and choreographed. Her choreography is also featured in Capitol One Commercials and on the Travel Channel.

Tricia also choreographed and produced her one woman show called Dining Alone at Dance Theater Workshop and created work for The A Train Musicals, The Fred Astaire Awards and the New York Musical Theater Festival . Committed, a new musical written by Tricia, will premiere at The West End Theater in New York City.

CALEB TEICHER

Caleb Teicher is a 2011 Bessie Award Winner for Outstanding Individual Performance and was listed on Dance Magazine's 2012 "25 to Watch." Caleb is a founding member of Dorrance Dance (Fall For Dance, Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out, Danspace Project) and is also currently a member of Syncopated City Dance Company and The Chase Brock Experience. Other dance credits include work with Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Cartier Williams, Richard J. Hinds, Camille A. Brown, and Igal Perry. Musical theatre credits include Singin' In The Rain (Gateway), The Music Man (Riverside), and West Side Story (Int'l Tour).

Caleb's choreography has been presented at many festivals including the Wheatland Music Festival, Conrad Tao's UNPLAY Festival, On Tap @ Joe's Pub, and Choreographer's Canvas, and he recently completed a choreographic commission with Chicago Tap Theatre. Other choreography contributions include The Seed of Abraham (NYCFringe), Elizabeth Tryon's There's A Phantom In My Opera, and Julia Oglivie's Freckle and Burn.

Josh Assor

Throughout Josh's career he has worked some of the most respected jobs in the industry including Broadway, National Tours, film and television. He has had the privilege of working with renowned directors, choreographers, and actors and has performed in major venues across the world including Canada, the U.S. Mexico and Europe. Some of his favourite credits include the role of Neleus in Mary Poppins on Broadway (Disney), the 1st National Tour of Mary Poppins (Disney), Baby John at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Aida (Manitoba Opera), originating the role of Ti-Cul and Dance Captain of Le Bleu D'La Metropole (Périphérie Productions) and filming a national commercial for Party City. Josh has been featured in Dance Canada Quarterly, Industry Dance Magazine and Dance Plug (Los Angeles). In addition to performing, Josh also adjudicates, teaches workshops and sets choreography for various studios, schools and colleges across North America. He has been on faculty at Metro Movement as well as a number of dance conventions and has won numerous awards for his choreography. He was recently a featured choreographer for I MOVE FORWARD, a cancer benefit show as well as the Toronto Choreographers Ball.

Kyle Mullins

Born and raised in Overland Park, KS, Kyle went on to earn is BFA in Dance at the University of Arizona. While studying in Arizona he was awarded a summer scholarship to Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Lou Conte's (studying with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago) and a summer apprenticeship to River North Jazz Dance Chicago. Since relocating to New York, he has had the pleasure to dance with the Steps Repertory Ensemble, dre.dance, Bill Young/Colleen Thomas and Dancers, The Chase Brock Experience, and York Dance Works. He has worked with Donald Byrd, Benoit-Swan Pouffer, Nathan Trice, Cherice Barton, Andrea Miller, Sean Curran, Camille A. Brown, Aszure Barton, Larry Keigwin, Shannon GIllen, and Zvi Gotheiner. He has performed for Kansas City Starlight in The Music Man, for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and on "One Life to Live". He has choregraphed for numerous NYFringe shows (Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical, Independents, Oregon Trail) and Capital Fringe (Who's Your Baghdaddy, or How I Started the Iraq War). He was most recently nominated for the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreography for the Off-Broadway Production of Triassic Parq: The Musical. He also teaches dance outreach with the Hudson Guild in NYC and has worked with children in Cape Town, South Africa.

CINDY SALGADO

Born in Sunnyvale, California, Cindy Salgado trained in multiple styles of dance and continues to explore a range of inspirations. After graduating from the Juilliard School in 2005, with the Princess Grace Award, she began freelancing in New York. She danced for Aszure Barton & Artists on projects such as "Busk" and Mikhail Baryshnikov's "Hell's Kitchen Dance Tour." She has assisted in preproduction for Andy Blankenbuehler on The Wiz, In The Heights, Bring It On, Fly and future productions. Cindy has worked for Mia Michaels as a performer and assistant on projects like SYTYCD, Delirium (a Cirque du Soleil production), and Anna Vissi concerts in Greece. She has taught and choreographed for dance schools throughout the US, and is currently on faculty with New York City Dance Alliance. She was a cofounder and volunteer teacher for ASTEP, an outreach organization that provides arts programming for underserved children internationally. Her work has been performed this year at the Joyce Theatre as a part of the NYCDA Foundation Benefit Concert, in Lincoln Center as a part of the Pianos Closing Celebration, and in NYs and TOs/TOES for Dance in and around Toronto. Cindy has recently become an Assistant Rehearsal Director for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and has been dancing for Crystal Pite's company, Kidd Pivot, since 2009.

Rickey Tripp

Performer, Choreographer, Dance Educator, and Certified Zena Rommett Floor-BarreÒ Technique Instructor. B.A. in Dance, San Jose State University. Broadway: Motown: The Musical, Tony Award Winning In the Heights (Original Cast). Off-Broadway: In the Heights Drama Desk Award 2007 for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. T.V./Film: SMASH, Whatever Lola Wants, Janemaan. Other theatre credits include: AIDA Nat'l Tour, Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the famous Rockettes, "Seth's Broadway 101" '09 Choreographer/Co-Director. Associate Choreographer: The Broadway Boys. Assistant Choreographer: FLY A New musical: DTC World Premiere, A Winters' Tale, Fortress of Solitude A New Musical and Hip-Hop with Seth Stewart. Assisted choreography on: In the Heights, Desperately Seeking Susan the Musical West End Premiere, 9-5 The Musical, The Wiz Encore Presentation, Bring It On A New Musical and SMASH. Company Work: Mark Stuart Dance Theatre. He has taught Master Classes and set choreography for various dance studios across the country including the prestigious NYU Theatre Department. JENNIFER JANCUSKA

Jennifer Jancuska is a New York based choreographer who's current and upcoming 2013 and 2014 projects include Fortress of Solitude with The Public Theater and Camille Brown, Only Gold with Andy Blankenbuehler and Fox Theatricals, I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It On The Road with Kathleen Marshall at City Center, the Lucille Lortel Awards (Choreographer), Cotton Patch Gospel (Choreographer), Evita (Associate Director/Choreographer), Les Miserables (Choreographer), Cats (Choreographer, Associate Director) and Lost Highway (Choreographer) at the Flat Rock Playhouse.

Recent work also includes choreography for Zelda: An American Love Story with Frank Wildhorn, Jack Murphy, Andy Blankenbuehler and Vincent Marini, associate director/choreographer at The Royal George Theatre, Trinity Repertory Theatre and the Merrimack Theatre, lead flyer and assistant choreographer for Phish at Madison Square Garden, as well as choreographer and master teacher for studios and universities across the country and around the world including the Shanghai Theatre Academy, New York City's Broadway Dance Center, the University of the Arts and the College of Charleston. Dance Magazine, Dance Informa, Dance Exec and Actor's Equity are among the many publications to feature Jennifer's work and leadership within the theatre and dance communities ("most memorable element is the superb original choreography by Jennifer Jancuska" - Asheville Citizen Times). A graduate of Cornell University, Jennifer is the co-founder of Broadway Connection, the Artistic Director of The BringAbout Productions, and the creative producer of BC Beat.
