Edith Shain, Nurse Pictured in Iconic World War II Photo, to Visit SOUTH PACIFIC 11/9

Edith Shain, the nurse in the iconic kissing photo taken in Times Square the day World War II ended, will have some enchanted evening when she visits the Tony Award winning Broadway revival of “South Pacific” and meets with ‘sailors’ from the cast, Sunday November 9, 2 PM, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, Lincoln Center.

A native New Yorker, Edith has returned to the Big Apple to serve as a Grand Marshal of the 2008 New York City Veterans Day Parade and as the national spokesperson for the Stories of Service Program. Stories of Service encourages the youth of America to gather and preserve personal stories from the men and women who have served their nation.

Prior to the matinee performance, Ms. Shain, in her nurse uniform, will meet with costumed cast members and urge the public to honor and uphold the legacy of our veterans.

With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, SOUTH PACIFIC is considered to be one of the greatest musicals in history, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. It opened on Broadway on April 7, 1949, at the Majestic Theater, and ran for five years. When it closed, it had the fifth-longest run in the history of Broadway. The first Broadway revival officially opened on April 3, 2008, at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center in New York City. The current production, directed by Bartlett Sher and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, garnered five Drama Desk Awards, five Outer Critics Circle Awards, 11 Tony nominations and seven Tony Awards, including Best Revival. The revival opened with Kelli O'Hara as Nellie Forbush, Paulo Szot as Emile de Becque, and Matthew Morrison as Lt. Cable, with Danny Burstein and Loretta Ables Sayre.
