Denton Community Theatre is very excited to present West Side Story, book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and conception/choreography by Jerome Robbins.

This production is directed by Pete Kelly with music direction by Arturo Ortega and choreography by Eddie Floresca. This team has put together a dynamic cast of energetic young performers. While a few will be recognized by regular Denton audiences, DCT is thrilled to welcome several newcomers to the Campus stage.

This beloved musical is based on the tale of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers, Romeo & Juliet set in 1950's New York City. The Sharks, a Puerto Rican street gang are taunted by The Jets, a Caucasian gang. Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. He is torn between loyalty to his friendships and love. West Side Story was innovative in many ways, but perhaps most notable is the use of dance to tell much of the story This ground breaking American musical includes the songs "America", "I Feel Pretty", and "One Hand, One Heart".

Performances are August 12, 13, 18, 19, 20 at 7:30pm and August 14, 21, at 2:00 at the Campus Theatre located at 214 W. Hickory, Denton.
