After the premiere of Facing Our Truth: Short Plays on Trayvon, Race and Privilege at the Segal Center, we continue our collaboration with The New Black Fest (New York) to explore privilege, race, and history. Join us as we present readings from The Ashes Under Gait City by Christina Anderson (New York), Book of Social Usage by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage (New York), and Schwarz Gemacht or How Klaus Found His Blackness by Alexander Thomas (Canada) directed by Kamilah Forbes.

Readings will be followed by a discussion with the playwrights, and the curator of the evening, The New Black Fest's Artistic Director Keith Josef Adkins.

Keith Josef Adkins and his collaborators founded The New Black Fest in New York City in 2010 to fulfill a need among Black American and Diasporic playwrights for further opportunities to develop new work and connect with audiences outside the confines and criteria of mainstream theatre institutions. Adkins' agenda is both political and artistic: The New Black Fest encourages Black playwrights to strive for diverse aesthetics, perspectives, and subject matter.

Also join the Segal Center on November 17 at 6:30pm for HANDS UP: Six Playwrights, Six Testaments, presenting work commissioned by The New Black Fest.

The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center is located at The Graduate Center CUNY.
