Charles W. Thompson Asks, IS THE UNITED STATES WORTH SAVING?

Author Charles W. Thompson offers wisdom and awareness to his readers in his new book, Is the United States Worth Saving? The author believes that the US government is unique in the history of mankind. It has been an experiment to determine whether or not the people can manage their own government-a feat that has never been done before. Only with a secure organization and comprehensive requirements to secure true public representation, an educated citizenry and a society focused on worthwhile achievement, can America maintain its democracy.

Thompson believes that the results of the specific condition identified above are legal breaks, tax loopholes and regulatory exemptions favoring a few. This problem is exacerbated by the public's disenchantment with politics. Added to the problem are growing trends in the social mores which reveals more attention to "good times" than social obligations of citizenship and reflected in the low voting rates of eligible voters. Is the United States Worth Saving? reveals how history repeats itself and how internal divisiveness destroys national unity. It stresses the vital nature for universal education and how the vast wealth of intellectual ability in the nation has been overlooked.

The book also points out the difficulty for people to realize how vastly different the 21st century is when compared only to the lives of their great-grandfathers. The growth of multinational corporations and the rise of "State Capitalism" alter concepts of free competitive enterprise which faces daunting challenges for survival. The growth of the nation and the free movement of people have resulted in nearly one in three Americans living in four states but the representative system is still tied to 1789. Significant suggestions are also proffered to protect the independence of the judiciary.

In Is the United States Worth Saving?, Thompson offers several proposals for consideration to redeem and enhance the republic; why the governmental units, federal, state, county and city must be aligned to achieve America's purpose to improve and protect the human condition and liberty. About the Author

Charles W. Thompson has spent a career in public management. He attended the University of Oklahoma and was selected to participate in an interdisciplinary program focused on municipal management. This provided eligibility to attend any colleges of the University - schools of law, business, engineering and social science - which were germane for a degree in public management. He also completed a master's degree in public management and economics. After three years as an administrative analyst in the departments of city planning, finance and public works in Kansas City, Mo., he was appointed assistant manager in Middletown, Ohio. The following year he was selected as manager of that city and for the next 36 years served as city manager of Middletown, Ohio, Springfield, Mo., Wyoming, Michigan, Downey, California and Huntington Beach, Calif. He was also employed by Governor Hearns of Missouri to draft legislation and the organizational framework for a State Department of Urban Affairs. He is now retired, living in Huntington Beach.
