In her new book "The Eyes in the Tree" (published by iUniverse) author Carolyn VanderBeek has crafted a delightful story about a chick, Blondos, and her learning adventure.

Baby chicks are ordered from the feed store by a customer. Upon arrival at the feed store, the customer selects each ordered chick from the appropriate breed. After being selected, the chicks find out that the quality of their lives is dependent upon what type of owner they have.

An excerpt from "The Eyes in the Tree":

"Quite right, but you know, this is the guide point," she continued with determination, ignoring his plea. "Right now they are healthy and happy-normal. We need to burn this into our minds. There will come a day, hopefully in the far distant future, that their behavior will change. We will have to remember what was normal, quickly recognize the difference, and help them."

"Good care and ethical treatment of animals is timeless in relevance to society," says VanderBeek. "Today, millions of dollars are spent on pet food, veterinary care, pet toys, pet clothes! Not to mention the purchase of the animal in the first place. But, I think care could be improved upon more if people would think more from their animals point of view."
