The true meaning of courage is pursued - on the baseball diamond and off - in CTC's Jackie & Me, on stage Feb. 27-March 15.

Ten-year-old Joey Stoshack has a special talent for time travel; so when he gets an assignment to write a report on a role model, he uses his powers to travel back to 1947 and meet the legendary Jackie Robinson, the first African-American baseball player in the major leagues. Joey plans on writing a prize-winning report, but he never plans on a trip that will forever change his view of history

"As a kid of Polish descent growing up outside Pittsburgh, I experienced the taunts and torments from others who told Polish jokes and made fun of my Polish heritage," said director Matthew Mazuroski. "Like Joey, I wanted to fight them and make them feel the sting of those hateful words. And ultimately, like Joey, I learned from Jackie's words when he said, 'It's not wrong to fight. The question is how. How are we going to fight: with our fists - or something more?'"

Jackie & Me is for ages 7+ but includes scenes of bullying and racial epithets. CTC can provide excerpts of the play for concerned parents. More information about the language can be found at ctcharlotte.org.
