Bronx River Greenway Opens $2.7 Million Extension

NYC Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Assembly Member Luis Sepulveda, Bronx River Administrator and Bronx River Alliance Executive Director Linda Cox today joined staff from the Wildlife Conservation Society and members of Community Board 11 to cut the ribbon on a new, .9-mile long segment of the Bronx River Greenway. The new pathway, located between Unionport Road and East 180th Street in Bronx Park, was constructed with $2.7 million in Croton Filtration Plant Mitigation funding.

"The Bronx River Greenway offers New Yorkers the unparalleled opportunity to walk, run or bike along our City's only freshwater river, and with the completion of this project now stretches for more than ten miles," said Parks Commissioner White.
"During the Bloomberg Administration, with the help of our partners in the Bronx River Alliance, in the community and in government, we have been able to invest more than $140 million to restore the Bronx River and create new parks and a greenway around it."

In addition to the designated greenway, the project also includes the installation of grass bioswales that will help to clean and capture storm water; ornamental trees, shrubs, vines and wild flowers; a new chain link fence; bicycle racks; new lighting and signage; and additional garbage cans.

The Bronx River Greenway has added 18 acres of newly developed parkland to the Bronx and improved another 22 acres of existing parks, bringing new open space and river access to Bronx neighborhoods and establishing a key pedestrian/bicycle route through the heart of the Bronx with connections to other greenway routes. When completed, the greenway will run along the full length of the Bronx River, through the Bronx and into Westchester.

Bronx Park is a 718 acre park with baseball fields, playgrounds, woodlands, waterfalls, the NY Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo. With this project, approximately 16 miles of the Bronx River Greenway are now in place. When completed, the greenway will extend the full length of the river, 23 miles through both the Bronx and Westchester.
