Brooklyn's acclaimed Brave New World Repertory Theatre presents Gertrude Stein's Pink Melon Joy, marking the first time this work, written 100 years ago, will be produced professionally in New York City.

Performances tonight, June 27 at 7p.m. and Saturday, June 28 at 2p.m. & 7p.m. Full details below.

Pink Melon Joy is an early Gertrude Stein play never before performed in New York City. According to Brave New World producing artistic director Shannon Sindelar, "The text is a thrilling example of Stein's 'theater of landscape.' Director Katherine Brook's production takes a strong point of view on Stein's abstract, fragmented text, interpreting its domestic-centered language as a fanatical pursuit of sweetness amid horror and violence. Moving briskly between war-time testimony, fractured poetry, and oozy baby-talk, the women in Brook's production are drawn deeper and deeper into the uncanny valley of their femininity, in a world in which good housekeeping is a battlefield and pregnancy is contagious.

"The design for Pink Melon Joy centers around costume (Diego Montoya) and sound (Chris Giarmo), and plays on themes of the uncanny valley, perverted nature, femininity, and the human body, to create a third-wave-feminist nightmare, revealing the Hello Kitty in all of us.

Pink Melon Joy brings together an exciting cast: Shonni Enelow, Lucy Kaminsky (Evelyn), Catherine Mancuso (NUN$), Sipiwe Moyo* (Trojan Women) and Alex Spieth* (Dead End).
