Acclaimed Academy Award-winning stage and screen actress Cate Blanchett and her husband, playwright Andrew Upton, announced their departure from the Sydney Theatre Company earlier this week.

Blanchett and Upton are credited with bringing the company back from the brink of financial ruin following their participation in the Australian theatrical mainstay, which they began with in 2009 and continued with, being made co- artistic directors and CEOs in 2012.

The couple had originally planned a two-year tenure in charge of the company and proceed to follow through on that promise, ending their run as CEOs at the end of 2013, despite protestations for the pair to remain at the helm by the chairman David Gonski.

Blanchett recently starred in a successful run of THE MAIDS at the Sydney Theatre Company, among many other notable productions there. Read more about that production in particular here.

No replacements for the couple have been announced at this time.
