Well, imagine my surprise when I opened my mailbox and not only did I receive a copy of the new Betty Buckley CD, Betty Buckley 1967 (being released on Playbill Records, a joint-venture partnership with SONY BMG Masterworks Broadway), BUT accompanying it, was a 12 inch LP, in all of its HI-FI "MONO" glory. The LP is being put out in a limited edition and sold separately through playbillstore.com.

Both the CD and the LP were sent out to theatre writers and music critics this week as the album sets to launch tomorrow, Tuesday, October 16th.

I guess that they're assuming that we've all saved our old record players from college or that we own turntables or that perhaps some of us are part-time DJs...and, of course, many do have turntables.

But, doing limited edition vinyl pressing has recently become extremely popular, with new artists like Bright Eyes to classic catalog artists like Sly & the Family Stone. Record companies can't seem to press the vinyl fast enough.

Also, as luck would have it, Buckley's timing turned out to be impeccable, with a performance scheduled this Saturday, October 20th, at New York City's Town Hall at 8pm (click here for details). Rumor has it that in addition to the show that she was scheduled to do, she will be doing a few numbers from 1967...40 years later.

Early word of mouth on this recording has been just what you'd expect from the theatre crowd, but it's been getting wider notoriety in the music business as well. At age 17 in Texas where she grew up, her family and the now legendary Grammy Award Winner T Bone Burnett's family were friends and he engineered this recording at a little studio that was the only game in town.

Years later, Tony Awardss and Grammys later, this album is a treasure and I can concur from having to listened to it that the early buzz was solid and that you will surely enjoy this unexpected release.

Just like any trend goes, (and exciting in its own right!) now it's been announced that Julie Andrews is releasing an album of songs ranging from when she was 12 years old to 21 years old, including what press notes state are "recordings made in the early years of Julie Andrews' career, the music and performances that would shape the career of a truly remarkable talent and a much loved lady. " That CD is being released on October 17th, one day after the Buckley release.

I guess what Peter Allen said is true. "Everything Old is New Again."
